Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

PEMBROKE, N.C.  Brianna Surrento and McKenzi Ferguson combined to allow just one run in 14 innings as the Lander softball team swept UNC Pembroke on Sunday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader.

Lander, which collected its first conference sweep of the season, improves to 9-13 overall and 2-2 in the PBC, while UNCP drops to 17-6, (2-2).

In the first game, Surrento (3-4) earned the win after striking out two, walking one and surrendering just one four hits in seven complete innings.

UNCP's Abbey Walters (9-2) took the loss, striking out two, and allowing six runs, four earned on eight hits in seven innings.

The Bearcats took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Surrento doubled home MaKenzie Smith. A wild pitch and a Chandler Carey single increased the lead to 3-0 in the fifth

Casey Wooten sprinted home to score on another wild pitch in the sixth and yet another wild pitch from Walters and an error brought home Smith and Kelli McCormack in the seventh.

But Francis Marion answered in the fourth with Taylor Brunson's solo homer to make it 5-3.

Lander rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead when Destiny Clyde and Reychel Webster both scored on fielding errors, and Sorrow belted a two-run homer over the left field fence. It was Sorrow's third homer of the year.

For Lander, Smith batted 2-for-2 with two runs scored.

In the second game, Ferguson struck out seven, walked two and allowed one earned run on four hits in the complete seven innings.

UNCP's Malerie Leviner (5-4) was tagged with the loss after striking out two and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

A Madison Moore double in the first inning that scored Surrento put Lander up 1-0 in the first inning, but the Braves answered in the bottom of the frame on a sac fly to tie the game.

The score remained knotted until the seventh inning when Destiny Clyde laced a double into left centerfield to drive in McCormack. Surrento drove in an insurance run with a double of her own to score Clyde.

For Lander, Surrento and Reychel Webster had two hits apiece.
