Lander holds off Montevallo to split PBC doubleheader

GREENWOOD  Destiny Clyde and Chandler Carey both had home runs Sunday afternoon as the Lander softball team a split of the Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Montevallo in front of a record 324 fans at Doug Spears Field.

Lander moves to 11-21 overall and 3-7 in the PBC, while Montevallo goes to 13-14, (4-5).

In the first game, Montevallo's Jocelyn Rivera (7-4) earned the win with one strikeout, four walks and one run on six hits in seven innings.

Brianna Surrento (3-8) suffered the loss for Lander, allowing one run on two hits in an inning of relief.

Destiny Clyde gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a home run over the right field fence and Lander held the one-run advantage entering the top of the seventh.

The Falcons rallied as Holly LaForce tied the game with a solo home run to begin the top of the seventh. A double and a single puts runners on second the third with one out for Montevallo and Kelsey Vinning's ground out to second base scored Celestia Davila and put the Falcons ahead. 

The Bearcats stranded the tying run at second in the bottom of the seventh. 

In the second game, McKenzi Ferguson (6-10) earned the win with two strikeouts, three walks and six runs on eight hits in five innings. 

Montevallo's Abbey Pratt (6-9) was tagged with the loss, striking out three and allowing seven runs on 10 hits in four innings.

Lander took a 5-0 lead in the first inning as an error at first base allowed Surrento and Clyde to score. Madison Moore then doubled home two more runs and scored on a single from Halie Sorrow.

Montevallo cut the lead to 5-2 in the third inning on a two-run homer, but Chandler Carey answered with a two-run shot of her own in the fourth.

A pair of Falcon home runs cut the lead to 7-6 entering the seventh inning, but Lexi Griffin shut down Montevallo to give the Bearcats the win. 

Moore went 3-for-4, while Clyde, Carey, Sorrow and Reychel Webster each had two hits for Lander.
