GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team suffered two losses Tuesday afternoon, losing to the Limestone Saints, 4-2 and 3-1, in a season-opening non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.

Catawba moves to 6-0, while the Bearcats fall to 0-2.

In the first game, Limestone's Courtney Smith (3-0) earned the win after striking out four, walking two and allowing one earned run on three hits in seven complete innings.

Lander's Brianna Surrento (0-1) took the loss with one strikeout, one walk and four earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Sam Thornton gave Limestone a 1-0 lead in the second inning when she plated Sydney Turner on a sac fly, but Lander responded with a solo homer from Halie Sorrow in the bottom of the inning. 

The Saints reclaimed the lead in the fifth inning on a three-run homer from Mary Hart that put Limestone ahead 4-1. 

Lander attempted to rally in the seventh inning as Casey Wooten scored on an error to trim the defict to 4-2, but the Bearcats stranded runners at second and third as Smith ended the game with a strikeout.

Sorrow accounted for all three of the Bearcats, going 3-for-3 on the day. For Limestone, Hart batted 2-for-4.

In the second game, Lander struck first as Chandler Carey homered in the third inning to give the Bearcats a 1-0 lead.

However, Limestone rallied late, taking the lead on a two-run homer from Marissa Lineberry in the sixth inning. Hart added an RBI double in the top of the seventh and the Saints held on for the sweep.

Josie Weber (2-0) earned the victory, striking out three, walking one and allowing one earned run on four hits in the complete seven innings.

McKenzi Ferguson (0-1) suffered the loss, striking out three, walking one and allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Carey batted 2-for-3 for Lander, while Turner went 2-for-3 for the Saints.
