Box Score 2 NEWBERRY, S.C. – Emily Marchbanks earned a win and a save on Tuesday afternoon as the Lander softball team dropped a pair of one-run decisions to Newberry at the Smith Road Complex. Newberry won both games by a score of 3-2.
Newberry improves to 12-5 overall, while Lander moves to 7-11.
In the first game, Newberry's Devon Morrison (7-2) earned the win by allowing one earned run in five innings on five hits with three walks and two strikeouts. Marchbanks tossed two scoreless innings of relief to earn her first save of the year.
Lander's Brianna Surrento (2-4) was tagged with the loss after striking out one and allowing eight earned runs on seven hits in five innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on an error that scored Chandler Carey, but Newberry answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
The Wolves extended the lead to 3-1 in the fourth on a solo home run from Haley Simonds. Carey cut the lead to 3-2 in the fifth when she was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, but the Bearcats could not complete the rally against Marchbanks.
In the second game, Marchbanks (5-3) was awarded the win after striking out five, walking five and allowing two earned runs on five hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Hannah Newton (2-2) took the loss, striking out two, walking three and allowing two earned runs on five hits in two innings.
The Wolves went up 3-0 in the opening two innings, but Lander rallied with an RBI double from Surrento that scored Casey Kent in the third inning and another RBI knock from Surrento in the fifth that drove in Destiny Clyde.
However, the Bearcats stranded the tying run in the sixth and seventh innings as Newberry secured the sweep.
Surrento and Carey each had two hits for the Bearcats.
