Box Score GREENWOOD – Lander sophomore Victoria Baldwin hit eight 3-pointers and scored a game-high 26 points, leading the Bearcats to a 93-76 victory over Georgia College Saturday afternoon in the Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 23-6 and will host the semifinals and finals next weekend. The Bearcats will face Clayton State in the semifinals next Saturday night, March 4, at 6 o'clock.
The Bobcats ended their season at 15-12.
Lander has won 13 of its last 14 games.
Georgia College battled back from a 14-point deficit to pull within a possession late in the third quarter. But Baldwin hit a 3 and Lander began to pull away, including a late 13-0 run in the final quarter.
Baldwin came into the game with 17 3-pointers on the season. She hit eight of 12 from beyond the arc Saturday and added a pair of free throws for a career-high 26 points.
The Peach Belt's leading scorer Breshay Johnson tallied 11 of 18 points in the fourth quarter for the Bearcats, Jessica Harris added 14 points, while Mylea McKenith scored 11 points while leading Lander with nine assists and six steals.
Kyra Wilson added a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds while adding four assists for the Bearcats. Ty'hesha Reynolds scored 10 points and dished out five assists for Lander.
Shay Tarver paced the Bobcats with 24 points, Alyah McGriff scored 23 points, Ta'Asia Wright added 13 points while leading Georgia College with nine rebounds, and Brianna Davis contributed 11 points and a team-high five assists.
The Eastern division champion Bearcats are chasing their second consecutive Peach Belt Conference tournament championship. Lander is participating in its 23rd Peach Belt tournament in 25 years, while seeking its fifth tournament championship in program history (1999, '08, '09, '16).
The Bearcats closed the regular season on Wednesday with an 86-52 win over Georgia College on Senior Day but were faced with a tougher game on Saturday.
Reynolds hit a jumper as Lander built an early lead of 12-6 with 4:50 left in the opening quarter and Baldwin's 3 kept the Bearcats ahead 17-13 at the two-minute mark. But Wright scored twice as Georgia College used a 7-2 run to take a 20-19 lead going into the second period.
McGriff's layup put the Bobcats up 25-22 with 7:52 left in the half. But Lander scored the game's next 18 points to build a 40-25 lead.
The 18-0 run started with Baldwin's fourth 3 of the afternoon, Wilson converted a layup, McKenith swished a 3 and then added two free throws, Wilson scored inside again, Reynolds went 2-for-2 from the line and added a layup on Lander's next possession, and Wilson grabbed an offensive rebound and scored.
The Bearcats outscored Georgia College 23-8 in the second quarter and led 42-28 at halftime.
The Bobcats stormed back in the third period, using a 15-3 run to pull within 45-43 with 4:48 left when Wright made a layup off Davis's steal. Davis scored six of Georgia College's 15 points during the run.
Tarver's 3 pulled the Bobcats within one possession at 52-49 with 2:45 left. But Baldwin banked in her sixth trey of the game and Harris followed with a 3 from the right wing, building Lander's lead back up to 58-49.
The Bearcats led 63-54 going into the final quarter.
Lander gained some more breathing room in the opening minute of the fourth period when Baldwin nailed her seventh 3 and then Wilson grabbed a defensive rebound and drove coast to coast for a layup, making it 68-54.
Baldwin's eighth 3 gave the Bearcats a 74-61 advantage with 6:50 to go.
Georgia College continued to battle, pulling within 75-68 on McGriff's basket with 4:38 left.
But Lander finally put the game away over the next minute with Johnson scoring twice and Baldwin added a pair of free throws for an 81-68 lead with 3:14 to go, starting a 13-0 run. Johnson put back her own miss, making it 84-68 at the 2:36 mark, and the lead eventually grew to 20 on a pair of Harris free throws.
