Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE, S.C. - The Lander softball team split its games Saturday at the Coker Spring Tournament, falling to Pfeiffer and downing Coker. The Bearcats dropped a 6-3 decision to Pfeiffer in the first game and defeated Coker, 8-5, in the second.
Lander is 6-8 overall on the season and will play King and Lincoln Memorial tomorrow.
In the first game, Pfeiffer held a 2-0 lead in the fifth inning before Lander cut the deficit in half on a Madison Moore single that scored Halie Sorrow.
The Bearcats trailed 3-1 entering the seventh inning, but Destiny Clyde singled and Chandler Carey came off the bench with one out to blast a pinch-hit home run to tie the game. However, Pfeiffer answered with three runs in the top of the eighth to take the win.
Hannah Newton (1-1) took the loss for the Bearcats, walking one and allowing one unearned run on one hit in 1.0 inning of relief.
For Lander, Clyde went 3-for-4, while Moore and Sorrow had two hits each.
In the second game, McKenzi Ferguson (3-4) earned the win for Lander, striking out nine, walking three and allowing three earned runs on five hits in 5.2 innings pitched.
Lander took a 2-0 lead on a solo homer from Clyde in the first inning and a sacrifice fly from Reychel Webster that plated Logan Leverette in the second.
Coker rallied to tie the game at 2-2, but home runs from Leverette and Webster in the fourth and sixth innings, respectively, put the Bearcats up 4-2.
The Cobras cut the lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the sixth, but Lander scored four runs in the top of the seventh on a pair of two-run homers from Brianna Surrento and Carey. Coker managed just one run in the bottom of the inning as Lander held on for the win.
Clyde and Carey went 3-for-4 at the plate.
