Kent's walk-off sparks doubleheader sweep for Bearcats

Box Score

GREENWOOD  Casey Kent's two-out, two-run single in the bottom of the seventh inning helped the Lander Bearcats record a doubleheader sweep of Wingate on Wednesday afternoon at Doug Spears Field.

The Bearcats won by scores of 10-9 and 9-0. The second game lasted just five innings

Lander improves to 4-4 overall, while Wingate falls to 4-6.

In the first game, Lander's Brianna Surrento (2-2) earned the win, striking out three, walking three and allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 4.2 innings.

Wingate's Rachel Weidner (1-4) took the loss after striking out two, walking eight and allowing seven earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings pitched.

Wingate took a 2-0 lead in the first inning inning on Misty Doran's two-run homer to left field.

Lander struck back in the bottom of the second. After a leadoff single from Madison Moore, Surrento tied the game by launching her first home run of the season over the center field fence.

The Bearcats then loaded the bases before Casey Kent drew a walk to put Lander ahead 3-2. Dariean Ward followed with another free pass to extend the lead to 4-2. With the bases still loaded, MaKenzie Smith singled to left field, then raced all the way home when the ball bounced away from leftfielder Jessica VonCannon as all four runners scored to make it 8-2 Bearcats.

The Bulldogs answered with solo home runs in the third and fourth innings from Naomi Sapp and Duran.

Wingate reclaimed the lead with five runs in the sixth inning. Aubrey Reep's three-run homer pulled the Bulldogs within a run and Wingate tied the game on an RBI double from Mary Claire Coyne. A bases loaded walk to VonCannon put the Bulldogs up 9-8.

Surrento singled to begin the bottom of the seventh and was replaced by Katie Painter on the basepaths. After Logan Levertte walked, Chandler Carey dropped down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners to second and third. With two outs, Casey Kent laced a single to left field. Painter scored and Leverette slid under the tag to give the Bearcats the win.

Moore batted 3-for-3 for the Bearcats.

In the second game, Lander's McKenzi Ferguson (2-2) was awarded the win after striking out four, walking one and allowing three hits in five shutout innings.

Wingate's Aubrey Reep (3-2) suffered the loss after striking out three, walking walking and allowing nine earned runs on seven hits in four innings.

Lander grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on a towering two-run homer from Madison Moore. The Bearcats stretched the lead to 3-0 in the third on an RBI single from Moore that plated Smith. An RBI single from Ward and a two-run base knock from Kent made it 6-0 Bearcats.

Destiny Clyde opened the bottom of the fourth with a solo home run and Surrento blasted a two-run homer to give Lander a 9-0 advantage.

Moore finished 2-for-3 with three RBI for the Bearcats.
