Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – Madison Moore drove in four runs and the Lander offense pounded out a season-high 10 hits as the Bearcats defeated Albany State 13-3 in five innings to wrap up the Cougar Classic. Lander lost to West Florida 5-2 in the first game of the day.
Lander moves to 2-4 overall after going 2-2 in Columbus.
In the first game, West Florida's Becca Taylor (4-1) earned the win with two strikeouts and two runs, both unearned, on four hits in seven innings.
McKenzi Ferguson (1-2) was tagged with the loss, striking out two and allowing four earned runs on 12 hits in 5.2 innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third inning when Destiny Clyde scored on an error. The Argonauts answered in the bottom of the frame on an RBI single from Jacey Castro.
West Florida extended the lead to 3-1 in the fifth after RBI singles from Kathleen Smiley and Rachel Wright. An RBI groundout from Meghan Toney and another single from Smiley made it 5-1 in the sixth.
The Bearcats managed a run in the seventh as Kelli McCormack scored on an error to make the score 5-2.
Clyde went 2-for-3, while Toney was 3-for-4 with a run scored for UWF.
In the second game, Lander's Brianna Surrento (1-2) earned the win with two strikeouts and three earned runs on eight hits in 2.0 innings.
Tiffany Mass (0-3) suffered the loss for Albany State, walking three and allowing four earned runs on four hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning as Clyde scored on an error and Chandler Carey drove in Moore and Halie Sorrow with a double to the left-center field gap.
Danielle Tur pulled the Golden Rams within a run, doubling home a run and then scoring on a wild pitch in the bottom of the first.
The Bearcats plated five runs in the second inning as MaKenzie Smith laid down a bunt that scored Casey Kent from third. A passed ball brought home Clyde and Moore drove Smith home with an RBI groundout. Surrento increased the lead to 7-2 on a sac fly to score Sorrow and Kent was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to plate Logan Leverette.
Moore drove in Smith with an RBI double in the third inning and later scored on a passed ball to give the Bearcats a 10-2 lead.
Albany State stopped the Bearcat momentum briefly in the bottom of the third on an RBI single from Jala Stewart, but Lander struck back in the top of the fifth when Moore drove a two-run homer over the center field fence and Dariean Ward singled home Katie Painter. Sorrento pitched around a single in the bottom of the fifth to give the Bearcats the win.
For Lander, Moore batted 2-for-3 with four RBI and three runs scored. Stewart led the Golden Rams, going 3-for-3 with an RBI.
