Lander notches second straight shutout with 1-0 win at Mars Hill

Box Score

Mars Hill, N.C. – The Lander women's soccer team got a first half goal from Sara Flores and kept Mars Hill off the scoreboard to earn a 1-0 win on the road Tuesday night in its final non-conference match of the year. The Bearcats (7-4) have now pieced together their third winning streak of the season.

The Bearcats grabbed the lead at the 16:23 mark when Emily Jermstad delivered a pass to Flores, who sped past the Lion defenders and beat goalkeeper Kaitlyn Danglemaier. The goal was the third in as many matches for Flores and her fourth in the last five outings.

Lander's defense limited Mars Hill (2-8-1) to just four shots and one corner kick on the night. The Bearcat offense fired 15 shots and tallied eight corner kicks.

Hannah Cowan, making her first start of the season, went the distance in goal. The sophomore made one save and registered her first career shutout.

With four regular season matches remaining, all against league opponents, Lander sits in sixth in the Peach Belt Conference standings.

The Bearcats will continue their three-match road trip on Saturday against Young Harris. Lander will face the Mountain Lions at 5:00 p.m.
