Johnson, Talackova help Lander pull away from Flagler

GREENWOOD – Breshay Johnson led six Lander double-figure scorers with 24 points as the Bearcats scored the final 13 points of the third quarter, pulling away from pesky Peach Belt Conference foe Flagler College 97-75 Wednesday night at Horne Arena.

Lander extended its home-court winning streak to 13 games dating back to the 2015-16 season, improving to 10-3 overall, 4-1 in the PBC.

Flagler fell to 2-11, 0-6.

The Bearcats improved to 13-3 all-time against the school from St. Augustine, Fla.

Johnson made 12 of 16 shots from the floor, adding a game-high nine rebounds while dishing out seven assists.

Zuzana Talackova added a career-high 17 points in just 15 minutes for Lander, making six of eight shots including five of seven from 3-point range.

Jessica Harris also scored 17 points while adding seven assists for the Bearcats. Destinee Langford contributed 15 points, PBC Player of the Week Ty'hesha Reynolds added 12 points while leading Lander with eight assists, and Mylea McKenith scored 10 points.

Flagler was short-handed, mainly using just six players with a seventh coming in for just five minutes and another under a minute. But the Saints hung tough, trailing by just four points midway through the third quarter.

Maggie Flynn led Flagler with 22 points, Tiffany Hodge scored 18 points on eight of nine shooting from the floor while leading her team with eight rebounds, Bri Roberts added 12 points, Kierra Crane scored 11 points, and Alex Alford added seven points and a game-high 10 assists.

Both teams shot well, with Lander making 56 percent of its shots from the floor (40 of 72) including 48 percent from 3-point range (11 of 23) while out-rebounding the Saints 37-24.

Flagler made eight of its first 10 attempts from behind the arc, finishing 11 of 16 (69 percent) from long range while hitting 29 of 56 (52 percent) overall.

The Bearcats had 29 assists in the game.

The Saints led by as many as four points in the first quarter, with Roberts making a 3-pointer for a 20-16 lead at the 5:07 mark. But Lander scored the final eight points of the period for a 33-27 advantage going into the second quarter. Harris and Talackova hit 3s, and Johnson scored in the paint to close out the first period.

Those final eight points were part of a 14-0 run, with Johnson scoring twice and McKenith adding a bucket giving the Lady Bearcats a 39-27 lead with 6:12 left in the opening half.

The rest of the second quarter was played evenly with Lander holding a 50-40 lead at the break.

Langford opened the second half with a basket, but Flagler answered with a 12-2 run, pulling within 54-52 on Flynn's jumper at the 7:15 mark. Crane made a pair of 3s during the Saints' run.

But Johnson scored eight points in a row, as her four baskets increased the Lady Bearcat lead to 62-52 with 5:44 to go. Flynn's basket cut Flagler's deficit to 64-60 just inside the three-minute mark.

Lander closed the third quarter with 13 unanswered points for a 77-60 lead. Harris scored two baskets in a row, McKenith scored twice, Talackova swished a 3, and Harris added two free throws.

Langford made consecutive 3s, giving the Lady Bearcats an 89-69 lead with 4:20 left in the final period.

Johnson scored two more baskets in the paint, increasing Lander's advantage to 95-71 with 2:32 to go.
