GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team set a school-record for Peach Belt Conference wins in a season when the Bearcats collected their 12th PBC victory Sunday afternoon after sweeping Augusta University, 7-5 and 2-0, in the regular-season finale at Doug Spears Field.

Lander, which improves to 26-20 overall and 12-12 in the PBC, earned its first winning season since 2003 and captured its first berth in the PBC Tournament since 2010. The PBC sweep was the fourth of the season for the Bearcats. Augusta ends the season at 18-34, 7-17.

In the first game, McKenzi Ferguson (16-9) earned the victory after striking out five, walking four and allowing two earned runs on seven hits in the complete seven innings.

The Jaguars' Haley Birkle (6-13) took the loss with two strikeouts, five walks and one earned run on six hits in six innings pitched.

Augusta took a 3-0 lead in the second when Casey Rowland scored on a Lander fielding error, followed by Ashley Boyd's two-RBI single to left centerfield.

The Bearcats rallied to take a 6-3 lead in the bottom of the inning after Casey Kent and MaKenzie Smith both belted three-run homers over the left field fence. It was Kent's second homer of the season and Smith's first.

The Jaguars cut the lead to 6-5 in the third when Kristen Bagley advanced home on an illegal pitch, while Lindsey Stokes scored on Rowland's sacrifice fly.

Lander closed out the scoring in the fifth on Halie Sorrow's RBI single that plated Smith.

For Lander, Kent batted 2-for-2. Erin Rozier had two hits for Augusta.

In the second game, Lexi Griffin (8-10) picked up the win after striking out two and allowing just four hits in six scoreless innings. Ferguson earned her sixth save of the season in one inning of relief.

Augusta's Paige Deschaine (10-11) suffered the loss with six strikeouts, one walk and two earned runs on four hits in six innings.

Lander scored both its runs in the fourth inning after pinch runner Bryanna Vasquez scored on Chandler Carey's RBI groundout and Emily Marousek drove in Kelli McCormack with a single to centerfield.
