Ferguson, Sorrow lead LU softball to split against GC

GREENWOOD - McKenzi Ferguson tossed a three-hit, complete-game shutout and the Lander softball team defeated Georgia College, 1-0, in the second game of the doubleheader to earn a Peach Belt Conference split Friday night at Doug Spears Field. Georgia College won the first game, 13-1.

The Bearcats, who move to 24-20 overall and 10-12 in the PBC, tied the school mark for conference wins in a season set in 1998. Georgia College is 37-15, 12-10.

Ferguson improved to 15-9 on the season.

GC's Carly Lewis (19-8) took the loss, striking out two and allowing one earned run in six innings.

The Bearcats' Halie Sorrow scored the lone run of the game with a fourth-inning, solo home run over the left field fence. Sorrow's homer, her fifth of the season, was Lander's only hit in the game.

In the first game, Georgia College's Brooke Taylor (7-1) earned the win after striking out one, and allowing just four hits in four scoreless innings.

The Bearcats Lexi Griffin (7-10) was tagged with the loss, striking out two, walking three and allowing eight earned runs on 16 hits in 5.2 innings.

Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first after Dariean Ward drove in MaKenzie Smith with a single to right field.

Georgia College rebounded in the second to go up 3-1 on RBI doubles by Emily Robertson and Taylor Campbell, and a run-scoring single by Danielle Bernstein.

The Bobcats added three more runs in the fourth to take a 6-1 advantage as Abi LeRoy had a two-RBI double and Lacey Najafe a one-run double.

Georgia College finalized the scoring in the seven-run sixth when Najafi singled in Holland Coursey and Hannah Coursey, and later scored on an error, then Robertson, Campbell, Baylee Hall and Holland Coursey had RBI singles.

For Lander, Smith and Emily Marousek both went 2-for-3.

For GC, Najafi and Hall batted 3-for-4, while Holland Coursey, Kristen Brooks, and Taylor Campbell had two hits apiece.
