Softball sweeps Francis Marion for 20th win of season

GREENWOOD - McKenzi Ferguson earned two wins on the mound, Casey Kent belted her first career-home run and the Lander softball team pounded out 25 hits as the Bearcats swept Francis Marion, 7-5 and 7-1, Wednesday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.

Lander, which collected its second PBC sweep of the season, improves to 20-14 overall and 7-7 in the PBC, while FMU drops to 25-15, 5-9.

In the first game, Ferguson (14-7) earned the win after striking out three, walking three and allowing one earned run on five hits in 4.2 innings of relief.

FMU's Shelby Kelley (12-12) took the loss, striking out two, and allowing four runs (none earned) on five hits in 3.1 innings of relief.

The Patriots took a 4-0 lead in the third when Mykah Nevin belted a two-run homer over the left field fence, Chelsea Welty went home on a wild pitch and Sharee Blomquist drove in Taylor Johnson.

The Bearcats cut the margin to 4-3 in the bottom of the inning after Dariean Ward's RBI single to centerfield plated Casey Wooten, Kelli McCormack's sacrifice fly sent Ward home, and Kent singled in Halie Sorrow.

But Francis Marion answered in the fourth with Taylor Brunson's solo homer to make it 5-3.

Lander rallied for four runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 7-5 lead when Destiny Clyde and Reychel Webster both scored on fielding errors, and Sorrow belted a two-run homer over the left field fence. It was Sorrow's third homer of the year.

For Lander, Sorrow batted 2-for-4 and Emily Marousek 2-for-3.

In the second game, Ferguson struck out four, walked one and allowed one earned run on seven hits in the complete seven innings.

FMU's Samantha Wroblewski (13-4) was tagged with the loss after striking out two and allowing four earned runs on seven hits in 3.1 innings.

The Patriots took a 1-0 lead in the third on Nevins' RBI groundout that sent Blomquist home.

Lander came back to score five runs in the fourth when the Bearcats took advantage of three Patriot fielding errors. Marousek doubled, while McCormack, Kent, MaKenzie Smith and Clyde all singled.

Kent stretched the lead to 7-1 in the fifth with her first career home run, a two-run shot over the right field fence.

For Lander, Sorrow, Kent, Marousek and Smith had two hits apiece.
