Box Score 2 GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team claimed its second consecutive doubleheader sweep Thursday afternoon when the Bearcats defeated Mars Hill, 5-4 and 6-0, in a non-conference twinbill at Doug Spears Field.
Lander improves to 13-9 overall, while the Lions drop to 6-11. Lander's 13 wins surpasses the Bearcats' 12 victories in 2015.
In the first game, McKenzi Ferguson (9-4) picked up the win in 6.2 innings of work after striking out seven and allowing one earned run on five hits.
The Lions' Casey Stanek (0-2) suffered the loss after allowing one earned run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning.
Mars Hill claimed a 3-0 lead in the first inning when, with bases loaded and one out, Kaleigh Jonas walked home, and Ragan Broome doubled in Erin Vickery and Krista Romine.
The Bearcats trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the inning after Casey Wooten, who reached on a bunt single and stole second, went home on Reychel Webster's stolen base. Lander kept the scoring going in the second inning when Destiny Clyde scored on Webster's sacrifice fly to cut it to 3-2.
Lander took the lead for the first time in the fourth after Clyde's RBI double plated Kasey Rogers, and Wooten advanced home on Dariean Ward's sacrifice fly.
Vickery tied the game at 4-all for Mars Hill in the sixth with a solo home run over the left centerfield fence.
But Lander answered in the bottom of the inning when Kelli McCormack drove in Webster for the game-winning run.
For Lander, Wooten and Clyde had two hits apiece.
For Mars Hill, Vickery totaled two hits.
In the second game, Lexi Griffin (3-4) earned the win on the mound after walking two and giving up four hits in 5.1 shutout innings. Ferguson was awarded her second save of the season after fanning three and walking one in 1.2 innings of relief.
Mars Hill's Shelby Culler (2-1) took the loss after striking out three, walking four and allowing four earned runs on six hits in 5.2 innings.
After three scoreless innings, the Bearcats went up 1-0 in the fourth after Madison Moore tripled and went home on Chandler Carey's RBI single.
Lander finalized its scoring in the five-run sixth when Moore advanced home on a bases-loaded walk, Casey Kent's RBI single plated Rogers and Carey, Clyde scored on a passed ball, and Webster drove in Wooten.
For Lander, MaKenzie Smith had two hits, while Krista Romine had two for the Lions.
Lander will next host North Greenville at 3 p.m., Monday, in a non-conference doubleheader at Spears Field.
