Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team recorded its second sweep of the season Tuesday, when the Bearcats claimed a non-conference doubleheader at Limestone's Babe Ruth Park. Lander took the first game, 7-2, and the second 6-4.
Lander improves to 9-7 overall, while Limestone drops to 9-5.
In the first game, Lander's McKenzi Ferguson (7-3) earned the win after striking out two, walking one and allowing three hits in 1.2 innings. Starter Lexi Griffin struck out one, walked two and allowed two earned runs on six hits in 5.1 innings.
The Saints' Courtney Smith (1-2) took the loss with seven strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs on 10 hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander claimed a 2-0 lead in the fifth when Casey Wooten and Destiny Clyde both scored on a wild pitch. But Limestone came back to cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on Bailie Maybry's RBI single, then tied the game at 2-all on Haley Crouch's RBI single.
The Bearcats exploded for five runs in the seventh when Clyde went home on a hit-by-pitch, Jamie Pisel and Wooten scored on a Limestone error, and Chandler Carey drove in Dariean Ward and Casey Kent.
For Lander, Wooten batted 3-for-4, while Limestone's Maybry also went 3-for-4.
In the second game, Ferguson picked up her second win of the day with four strikeouts, two walks and three earned runs on seven hits in the complete seven innings.
Limestone's Klinnin Carson (3-2) took the loss, striking out one, walking two and allowing one earned run on eight hits in 3.2 innings.
Haley Sorrow gave Lander a 1-0 lead in the third inning when her RBI single plated Wooten, then the Bearcats added four more in the fourth after Emily Marousek scored on a throwing error, Clyde went home on a wild pitch, and Sorrow smacked a two-run homer down the left field line.
Limestone cut the margin to 5-1 in the fourth after Sam Thornton went home on a Lander error, but the Bearcats came back with a run in the sixth on Kelli McCormack's RBI groundout that scored Clyde.
The Saints rallied for three runs in the sixth on Crouch's RBI groundout and Williamson's two-RBI single to cut it to 6-4.
Sorrow batted 3-for-4 for Lander, while Ward went 2-for-4.
