Box Score GREENWOOD – Travis Fredimon scored 19 points as the Lander Bearcats advanced to the Peach Belt Conference Tournament semifinals for the first time in nine years, outlasting Georgia College 83-77 Saturday afternoon at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 20-9 overall, beating the Bobcats for the second time in four days. The Bearcats also beat Georgia College in the regular season finale Wednesday.
The Bobcats fell to 18-11, likely ending their season.
Peach Belt East Division champion Lander made 27 of 30 free throws (90 percent) and out-rebounded PBC West No. 4 seed Georgia College 42-17.
Fredimon led the Bearcats in both points (19) and assists (5). Tobiasz Hose added 18 points and shared team-high honors with nine rebounds, Jarryd Coleman scored all 14 of his points in the first half, JR Washington added 12 points and Scott Elder hadd nine rebounds. Coleman made four of four 3-pointers.
Georgia College's Terrell Harris led all scorers with 28 points on 10 of 16 shooting from the floor and added six steals. Harris had scored 39 at Horne Arena on Wednesday.
Chaz Berry added 20 points for the visitors, Dwight Anderson had 17 points and seven assists, and Isaac Thomas led the Bobcats with five rebounds.
Lander made 24 of 54 shots from the floor (44 percent), 27 of 30 from the stripe and eight of 15 from 3-point range (53 percent).
The Bobcats hit 27 of 51 shots (53 percent), 13 of 20 free throws (65 percent) and 10 of 26 from behind the arc (39 percent).
Washington converted a three-point play off Hose's steal, giving Lander a 13-10 lead with 15:23 left in the first half. But Georgia College used a 20-6 run to build a 30-19 advantage at the 9:23 mark. Berry (nine) and Anderson (eight) scored 17 of those 20 points, with Anderson starting and finishing the run with 3s.
The Bearcats went on a 14-2 run, fueled by 3-pointers, to retake the lead. Coleman hit three 3s in a row and Matthew McClain also made one from long range. Coleman's third 3 gave Lander a 33-32 advantage with 6:15 left.
Anderson's third 3 of the game gave the Bobcats a 39-35 lead with 4:09 left. But Coleman's fourth trey pulled the Bearcats within 41-40 with 1:39 to go, and his first two free throws of his college career cut Lander's deficit to 43-42 with 54 seconds left.
Georgia College led 46-44 at halftime.
The Bearcats scored nine unanswered points to take their first lead of the second half at 58-52. Hose started the run with a game-tying three-point play, Sergio Smith put them ahead with two free throws, and Fredimon scored twice. Washington's 3-pointer gave Lander a 61-54 lead with 12:13 left.
Fredimon's two free throws handed the Bearcats their first double-digit lead of the game at 68-58 with 8:33 to go. But Harris made a 3 to pull Georgia College within 68-63 with 7:21 left.
Another Harris 3 cut the Bobcats deficit to 70-66 with 6:36 to go.
After a nearly three-minute scoring drought, Fredimon finally put points on the board when his two free throws gave Lander a 72-66 advantage with 3:36 left.
After Anderson scored but missed a free throw to blow a three-point play opportunity, Washington saved an offensive rebound and Hose came up with a layup and a 74-68 lead with 2:42 to go.
Anderson's 3 pulled the Bobcats within a possession at 74-71 just inside the two-minute mark. Washington added two free throws at 1:33 and Hose two more at 37 seconds left for a 78-71 lead.
Berry's 3 pulled Georgia College within 78-74 with 26 seconds left.
Fredimon's two free throws upped Lander's lead to 80-74 with 15 seconds left. But Berry's long 3 pulled the Bobcats within 80-77 with 10 seconds to go.
Elder made one of two free throws, making it 81-77 with eight seconds left. Harris was fouled behind the arc and had a chance to make three free throws but missed all three. Washington added the final points from the line.
