Box Score GREENWOOD – The Peach Belt Conference East Division champion Lander Lady Bearcats clinched a share of the best overall record in the PBC, beating league rival Georgia College 88-64 for their 10th consecutive victory Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
Lander improved to 22-6 overall and finished 16-3 in the Peach Belt ahead of the league tournament which begins Saturday. It's the second straight season that LU finished 16-3 in the PBC.
The Lady Bearcats shared the Peach Belt's best overall record with Columbus State (16-3), which won the West Division by outlasting Clayton State (15-4) Wednesday night.
Georgia College finished 16-12 overall, 8-11 in the PBC.
The two teams will meet again Saturday in the first round of the Peach Belt Conference Women's Basketball Tournament with East No. 1 seed Lander hosting West No. 4 Georgia College at Horne Arena.
Wednesday was Senior Night at Lander with Bre Crum, Ashleigh Zandi and Ariel Parker being honored.
Crum, Mylea McKenith and Ty'Hesha Reynolds led the Lady Bearcats with 18 points apiece, Breshay Johnson added 12 points while pacing Lander with eight rebounds, and Zandi contributed nine points while leading the team with six assists. Crum paced the Lady Bearcats with four steals while Jada Wallace and Crum each added seven rebounds.
LaRice Walker led Georgia College with a double-double, including team highs in points (16), rebounds (10) and assists (6). Kadesha Gibbs scored 11 points while Alyah McGriff and Lindsey Reed each scored 10.
Lander hit 50 percent of its shots from the floor, making 30 of 60. The Lady Bearcats hit 19 of 28 free throws (68 percent) and nine of 21 from 3-point range (43 percent).
The Bobcats were 22 of 60 from the floor (37 percent), 17 of 28 from the line (61 percent) and three of 11 from behind the arc (27 percent) while outrebounding Lander 43-36.
Georgia College led 6-3 on McGriff's layup with 6:36 left in the opening quarter. But Lander broke the game open with a 23-3 run, building a 26-9 lead with 1:06 left in the period. Reynolds scored seven points during the run, McKenith had six points, Crum scored five, Zandi hit a 3-pointer, and Breshay Johnson had one basket. The Lady Bearcats led 26-14 going into the second quarter.
McGriff pulled the Bobcats within single digits at 31-23 with 6:12 left in the first half. But Lander extended its lead to 41-26 with a 10-3 run, with Reynolds and Sannayyiah Johnson making 3s.
The Lady Bearcats led 46-29 at halftime.
Breshay Johnson and Crum scored in the paint, building Lander's lead to 50-29 in the first two minutes of the second half. Gibbs made a layup to pull Georgia College within 59-44 with 1:55 left in the third.
The Lady Bearcats led 66-48 going into the final period.
McKenith's 3 gave Lander its biggest lead of the game at 23 points, 74-51, with 6:28 to go. The lead grew to 78-52 on Breshay Johnson's basket with 5:19 left. That 26-point advantage was the largest of the game.
Zandi's third 3 of the game made it 88-63 with 20 seconds to go. After her made shot, she and Crum were taken out of the game for the last time in their Lady Bearcat regular season careers.
