Ward leads LU softball to doubleheader split at Pfeiffer

MISENHEIMER, N.C. - Dariean Ward drove in Kelli McCormack with a seventh inning RBI single up the middle in the second game Thursday afternoon to lead the Lander softball team to a 7-6 non-conference doubleheader split against Pfeiffer University at Jack Ingram Field. Pfeiffer won the first game, 2-0.

Both teams are now 5-5 on the season. The two teams also split a doubleheader in Greenwood on Friday, Feb. 12 at Doug Spears Field.

McKenzi Ferguson (3-3) earned the win on the mound for Lander, striking out three and allowing just one hit in 1.1 innings.

Pfeiffer's Kiana Millsaps (0-1) took the loss with three strikeouts and one earned run on two hits in 2.1 innings.

The Falcons took a 2-0 lead in the first on an RBI single by Kaleigh Troutman, followed by Rachel Crowder's sacrifice fly.

But Lander bounced back in the bottom of the inning to cut it to 2-1 after Reychel Webster advanced home when Casey Kent was hit by a pitch.

The Bearcats took its first lead of the day at 3-2 as Kent tripled in Madison Moore in the third and Emily Marousek drove in Destiny Clyde in the fourth.

Crowder came right back put the Falcons up 6-3 in the fourth with a grand slam.

Not to be outdone, Lander knotted the game at 6-all in the fifth when Ward's two-RBI double scored McCormack and Moore, and Marousek doubled in Ward.

Moore and McCormack had two hits each for Lander.

For Pfeiffer, Vada Blue Sherrill, Emma Tuttle, Crowder and Troutman had two hits apiece.

In the first game, the Falcons' Kennedy Lester (3-2) was awarded the win after striking out two, walking one and giving up four hits in the complete-game shutout.

Lander's Ferguson was tagged with the loss with seven strikeouts, three walks and two earned runs on six hits in six innings.

Pfeiffer scored the lone runs of the game in the fourth inning on Abi Peck's two RBI single which plated Troutman and Jaclyn Boever.
