Box Score 2 GREENWOOD - The Lander softball team rallied in the seventh inning Saturday evening and scored two runs on a Belmont Abbey throwing error to pull out a 4-3 victory in the second game and earn a split in the non-conference doubleheader. The Crusaders won the first game, 7-2.
Both teams are now 4-4 on the season.
Trailing 3-2 in the bottom of the seventh, Lander center fielder Casey Wooten bunted back to Belmont Abbey pitcher Laura Williams to try and move MaKenzie Smith to second and Reychel Webster to third. However, Williams overthrew third baseman Sloane McPeak on the force out attempt, which allowed Webster and Smith to score the winning runs.
McKenzi Ferguson (2-2) earned the win in one inning of relief, striking out one of two batters faced. Starter Lexi Griffin struck out seven, walked seven and allowed one earned run on just two hits.
Williams (1-1) took the loss after striking out three, walking two and allowing two earned runs on five hits.
Mackenzie Dziendziel gave the Crusaders a 1-0 lead in the first when she scored on a bases-loaded walk. But Lander came right back and tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the inning on Halie Sorrow's RBI single that plated Wooten.
The Crusaders went up 2-1 in the fourth after Dziendziel stole home as part of a double steal, then added another run in the sixth when Alyssa Sciaudone went home on a bases-loaded walk.
Sorrow kept Lander's hopes alive with a lead off homer over the centerfield fence to cut the gap to 3-2.
Sorrow batted 2-for-2 for the Bearcats.
In the first game, Belmont Abbey's Samantha Jacobs (2-1) earned the win after striking out seven, walking four and allowing two earned runs on six hits in seven complete innings.
Ferguson was tagged with the loss with six strikeouts, four walks and six earned runs on 15 hits in seven innings.
The Crusaders grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on RBI singles by McPeak and Dani Marietta and a sacrifice fly by Sciaudone. Dziendziel extended the margin to 4-0 in the second with a solo home run to left centerfield.
The Crusaders added two more runs in the sixth to take a 6-0 advantage when Alexis Pereiro scored on McPeak's sacrifice fly and Dziendziel went home on a Lander throwing error.
The Bearcats cut the margin to 6-2 in the sixth after Casey Kent advanced home on a bases-loaded walk and Dariean Ward followed on a wild pitch.
For Lander, Wooten and Sorrow had two hits each.
For Belmont Abbey, Dziendziel and Sloane McPeak had three hits each, while Reisenauer had two.
