Box Score GREENWOOD – Rachelle Aupont hit five 3-pointers in the final 4:18 as USC Aiken rallied from a 10-point fourth quarter deficit to upset Lander 68-65 in a Peach Belt Conference game Wednesday night at Horne Arena.
The Lady Bearcats, who led by as many as 15 points in the first half and were up 54-44 going into the fourth quarter, fell to 11-5 overall, 5-2 in the PBC.
Aiken's Lady Pacers improved to 7-9 overall and 2-5 in the league while tying the all-time series at 41 wins apiece.
Immediately after the game, Lander honored long-time basketball radio announcer Rauch Wise for his 30 years (1985-2015) behind the mic.
Breshay Johnson posted a double-double, leading Lander with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She made eight of nine free throws.
Bre Crum added 15 points, six rebounds and four assists for the Lady Bearcats. Ty'hesha Reynolds had 10 points and led Lander with six assists. Jada Wallace was the Lady Bearcats' second-leading rebounder with 10, including eight defensive boards.
Aupont scored all 15 of her points in the fourth quarter to pace Aiken, including five of nine from behind the arc. Muriah Durian added 12 points while Kassy Johannsen had 10 points, six rebounds and four blocked shots for the Pacers.
Jasmine Coach led Aiken with nine rebounds while Stephanie Ball, Johannsen and Aubrey Lukackso had four assists apiece.
The Lady Bearcats made 20 of 61 shots from the floor (33 percent), 18 of 25 free throws (72 percent) and seven of 28 from 3-point range (25 percent) while outrebounding Aiken 45-38.
The Lady Pacers made 25 of 66 shots (38 percent), five of six free throws (83 percent) and 13 of 31 from behind the arc (42 percent).
Lander scored 11 unanswered points to increase a 7-4 lead to 18-4 with 4:48 left in the opening quarter as Reynolds hit a 3, Johnson converted a three-point play, Ashleigh Zandi nailed a 3, and Johnson made a layup.
USC Aiken's Ball made a 3 to end the run. But the Lady Bearcats built their lead to 25-10 on Wallace's free throw. Lander led 25-13 after one quarter.
Zandi opened the second period with another 3, and Wallace hit a jumper to up the Lady Bearcats lead to 32-17 with 6:38 until halftime.
But the Pacers used a 10-2 run to cut their 15-point deficit to seven, 34-27, with Durian and Lukackso making 3s.
Lander led 36-29 at halftime.
Johannsen's jumper pulled Aiken within 5, 38-33, in the second minute of the third quarter and the Pacers would cut it to five twice more at 41-36 and 43-38.
But a Crum 3 and Reynolds jumper increased the Lady Bearcats lead back to 10, 48-38, at the five-minute mark of the third period. Crum's two free throws gave Lander a 12-point lead at 52-40 with 2:27 left in the third.
The Lady Bearcats were up 54-44 going into the fourth quarter.
Lukackso's 3 pulled Aiken within 56-49 at the five-minute mark. The first of Aupont's five 3s cut it to 58-52 with 4:18 left, and Aupont hit another 3 off an offensive rebound for the Pacers' smallest deficit since the first quarter at 58-55 with three minutes to go.
Stuck with only four points in the fourth quarter, Lander needed a big basket under the three-minute mark and got one. Zandi missed a 3, but Crum got the offensive rebound leading to Wallace's turnaround jumper for a 60-55 advantage with 2:25 to go.
Johannsen's inside bucket pulled Aiken back within a possession at 60-57 at the 2:18 mark. But Johnson was fouled off an offensive rebound and made one of two free throws for a 61-57 lead with 1:50 left.
Aiken missed a pair of 3-point shots around the minute mark and Crum grabbed the rebound on the second miss.
Reynolds made one of two free throws with 50 seconds left to increase Lander's lead to 62-57.
But Aupont made another 3 from the corner to close Aiken within 62-60 with 43 seconds left.
Mylea McKenith made a pair of free throws to put the Lady Bearcats back up by four. But Aupont hit yet another long-range shot as Aiken was within 64-63 with 35 seconds left.
Zandi made one of two free throws for a two-point lead. But Aupont nailed another 3 from the top of the key, giving Aiken its first lead of the game at 66-65 with 18 seconds left.
Lander turned the ball over on the ensuing possession and Durian made two free throws for a 68-65 Pacers lead with 12.5 seconds to go.
Zandi's 3-point attempt from the right corner rimmed out with five seconds left. But Lander got another chance when Aiken turned the ball over with 2.2 seconds to go. But Crum's long 3 attempt from the top of the key did not draw iron as the clock expired.
