Box Score 2 DAHLONEGA, Ga. - Despite Hannah Newton's one-hitter in the first game, the No. 8-ranked North Georgia softball team claimed two victories over Lander Friday afternoon in a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Hill Stadium. UNG won the first game, 3-0, and the second, 7-3.
The Nighthawks improve to 29-5 overall and 10-0 in the PBC, while Lander moves to 12-20, 6-10.
In the first game, the Nighthawks' Courtney Poole (23-1) earned the victory on the mound after striking out 10 and allowing two hits in the complete-game shutout.
Newton (8-10) suffered the loss with four strikeouts and two earned runs in six innings.
North Georgia went up 1-0 in the first inning on Jessica Finch's sacrifice fly that plated Meagan May, then stretched it to 2-0 in the fourth when Katie Block advanced home on a throwing error. The Nighthawks made it 3-0 in the sixth on another Finch sacrifice fly that plated Tiffanie Burns.
In the second game, UNG's Poole earned her second win of the day, striking out three, and allowing just one hit in four innings. Meagan Stover was credited with her first save of the season after striking out two, walking one and allowing three earned runs on four hits in three innings.
The Bearcats' Amanda Chastain (4-10) took the loss after walking three and allowing six earned runs on eight hits in six innings.
UNG took a 2-0 lead in the first on Burns' two-run shot to left centerfield, then made it 4-0 in the second on May's two-RBI single.
North Georgia continued the scoring in the fifth on Ansley Phillips' RBI single that scored Burns.
Lander trimmed it to 5-1 in the sixth on Dariean Ward's RBI double that sent Destiny Clyde home.
The Nighthawks responded in the bottom of the inning on Katie Block's homer over the centerfield fence and Alexis Collis' sacrifice fly to make it 7-1.
The Bearcats' Melanie Davis belted a two-run homer to left field in the seventh to finalize the scoring at 7-3.
Reychel Webster had two hits for Lander.
