Softball takes one from LMU in doubleheader split

GREENWOOD – Sophomore Emily Marousek belted her second game-winning hit in as many days and Hannah Newton tossed a two-hitter Sunday to lead Lander to a 5-4 victory over Lincoln Memorial in Game 1 and a non-conference, doubleheader split against Lincoln Memorial University at Doug Spears Field. The Railsplitters won game two, 8-3.

Lander moves to 12-18 overall, while LMU is 12-16.

The Bearcats' Halie Sorrow led off the seventh with double to right field then went home on Marousek's RBI single to the pitcher. Marousek also had a game-winner on Saturday in a split against Georgia Southwestern.

Newton (8-9) scored the victory on the mound, striking out one, walking four and allowing four earned runs on two hits in the complete seven innings.

LMU's Samantha Smith (4-8) suffered the loss, striking out four, walking one and allowing two earned runs on nine hits in 4.2 innings pitched.

The Railsplitters took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning after Amanda Snow scored on a wild pitch.

Lander tied the score at 1-all in the bottom of the inning when Casey Kent, who reached on a single, later scored on Reychel Webster's RBI single.

The Bearcats went up 2-1 in the fifth inning on Destiny Clyde's RBI double that plated MaKenzie Smith.

LMU regained the lead at 4-2 in sixth on Ashlea Hunter's three-run homer to center field.

With bases loaded in the sixth, Lander tied the game at 4-all when Webster and Melanie Davis advanced home when Clyde was hit by a pitch and Casey Wooten walked.

For Lander, Sorrow, Marousek and Webster had two hits each.

In the second game, Lander jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Sorrow's RBI single that plated and Wooten, and Marousek's double that drove in Sorrow.

LMU cut it to 2-1 in the second after Teddi Collins drove in Jennifer Moose. The Railsplitters then used Savannah Couch's three-run homer to left centerfield to go up 4-2 in the fourth. In the sixth, Moose and Collins had back-to-back home runs to stretch the lead to 6-2.

The Railsplitters added two runs in the seventh on Megan Tice's two-RBI double to left centerfield.

Lander finalized its scoring in the seventh when Dariean Ward advanced home on Sorrow's sacrifice fly.

For the Bearcats, Sorrow and Webster had two hits apiece.
