Lander softball splits with Georgia Southwestern

GREENWOOD – Lander sophomore Emily Marousek belted the game-winning hit to left field in the eighth inning of the second game Saturday to lead the Bearcat softball team to a 6-5 Peach Belt Conference victory and a doubleheader split against Georgia Southwestern at Doug Spears Field. The Hurricanes won the first game, 6-5.

Lander moves to 11-17 overall and 6-8 in the PBC, while GSW is 15-19, 2-8.

Dariean Ward reach on a fielding error and advanced to second, went to third on a wild pitch then scored on Marousek's hit.

Hannah Newton (7-9) earned the win on the mound after striking out one and walking one in two-thirds of an inning. Starter Amanda Chastain struck out three, walked three and allowed five unearned runs on eight hits in 7.1 innings.

GSW's Haley Goodson (4-9) was tagged with the loss after striking out five, walking four and allowing two earned runs on nine hits in 7.1 innings.

Ward's RBI single plated Destiny Clyde in the first inning to give Lander a 1-0 lead.

GSW went up 2-1 in the second after Lauren Thrasher smacked a solo homer to left field and Chelsea Littlejohn drove in Haley Warner.

The Bearcats made it 2-2 in the second when Reychel Webster went home on a GSW fielding error. Lander stretched it to 4-2 after Casey Kent scored on a wild pitch in the third and Ward went home on a fielding error in the fourth.

GSW rallied to tie the game at 5-5 in the seventh on Rachel McElroy's three run homer.

Ward, Marousek and Melanie Davis had two hits each for Lander.

In the first game, GSW's Savannah Carlisle (6-8) earned the win on the mound after striking out two, walking two and allowing one earned run on five hits in 3.2 innings of relief.

Newton (6-9) took the loss for Lander, striking out one, walking two and allowing six earned runs on 11 hits in the complete seven innings.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the first when Marousek drove in Ward and Kent's RBI double plated Halie Sorrow.

The Bearcats stretched the margin to 3-0 in the second after MaKenzie Smith scored on Ward's sacrifice bunt.

The Hurricanes trimmed the lead to 3-1 in the third when Erin Steele went home on Keri Tompkins' fielder's choice, then GSW tied it at 3-all in the fourth on Littlejohn's two-run homer over the left field fence.

GSW regained the lead at 5-4 in the sixth inning on another Littlejohn two-run homer to left field. Thrasher's solo homer to left field in the seventh stretched the margin to 6-4.

Lander rallied for one run in the seventh Molly McNulty's RBI single that plated Davis.

For Lander, Davis batted 2-for-3 with one double.
