Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – Valdosta State's Jaime Phillips blasted five home runs and Huntyre Elling tossed a five-inning, no-hitter Wednesday evening to lead the top-ranked Blazers' softball team to a non-conference, doubleheader sweep at Doug Spears Field. VSU won the first game, 12-0, and the second, 13-0, both via the eight-run rule.
The Blazers improve to 31-2 overall, while Lander moves to 10-16.
In the first game, Caitlyn Calhoun (18-1) earned the win after striking out 10 and allowing just two hits in the five-inning shutout.
Lander's Amanda Chastain (4-8) suffered the loss, striking out one, walking six and allowing 12 earned runs on eight hits in five innings.
Valdosta State took an 8-0 lead in the first inning when Jaime Phillips scored on a bases-loaded walk and later belted a solo home run over the left field fence, Fran Johnson advanced home on a wild pitch, Morgan Butler smacked a three-RBI triple to right field, and Chelsea Canara tripled in Butler and followed her home on a throwing error.
The Blazers went up 11-0 in the second inning after Jaime Phillips blasted her second homer of the game, a two-run shot to left field, and Johnson added a solo shot to centerfield.
VSU added another run in the fifth when pinch runner Taylor Hartenbach advanced home on a stolen base by Jaime Phillips.
In the second game, Elling (9-0) struck out seven and walked three in the shutout.
Lander's Hannah Newton (6-8) took the loss, striking out two, walking eight and allowing 10 earned runs on eight hits in four innings pitched.
Jaime Phillips led off with her third home run of the day, a solo shot that gave the Blazers a 1-0 lead in the first, then, with bases loaded, Johnson went home when Heather Robinson was hit by a pitch.
VSU made it 5-0 in the second on Jaime Phillips' fourth homer, a two-run shot to left field, and Jennifer Phillips' RBI double.
Johnson's grand slam in the third inning stretched the Blazers' lead to 9-0, then VSU made it 10-0 when Canara scored on a passed ball in the fourth.
The Blazers went up 13-0 in the fifth after Jaime Phillips fifth homer hit the scoreboard in centerfield, Brandy Morgan's sacrifice fly plated Johnson, and Jennifer Phillips stroked a solo shot over the right centerfield fence.
