Webster leads LU softball to split against Lenoir-Rhyne

GREENWOOD – Reychel Webster's eighth-inning RBI single drove in Casey Kent to lead the Lander softball team to a 4-3 victory in Game 1 and earn a split in the non-conference doubleheader against Lenoir-Rhyne Wednesday evening at Doug Spears Field. Lenoir-Rhyne won the second game, 15-5, via the eight-run rule in six innings.

Lander moves to 10-12 overall while Lenoir-Rhyne is now 20-9.

In the first game, Lander's Hannah Newton (6-6) earned the complete-game victory, striking out seven, walking three and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in eight innings.

Lenoir-Rhyne's Brandi Hole (10-6) suffered the loss in two-thirds of an inning of relief. Hole walked one.

Lenoir-Rhyne took a 1-0 lead on Averi Miller's leadoff homer in the first inning.

Lander tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the inning after Destiny Clyde walked and later scored on Emily Marousek's fielder's choice.

Miller blasted another solo shot, this time to left centerfield, to give the Bears a 2-1 lead in the third, then Sarah Kenley launched one over the right field fence to go up 3-1 in the fourth.

Marousek's leadoff homer over the left field fence in the bottom of the inning cut the Bears' advantage to 3-2, then Lander forced extra innings in the sixth when Melanie Davis went home on Webster's RBI double to centerfield.

For Lander, Dariean Ward batted 3-for-3, while Webster had two hits.

In the second game, Hole earned the victory, striking out five, walking two and allowing four earned runs on six hits in six innings.

Lander's Amanda Chastain (4-6) was tagged with the loss after walking five and allowing nine earned runs on 13 hits in 5.2 innings.

LR jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the second inning on Madison Poe's RBI single and Sydney Landreth's two-RBI double. Jordin Phillips led off the third inning with a solo homer over the left field fence to take a 4-0 advantage, then Kenley add an RBI double in the fourth.

The Bearcats cut the lead to 5-4 in the fourth on Davis' RBI double down the left field line that scored Marousek, then Clyde doubled in Courtney Adsit, Davis and Kent.

The Bears answered with five runs in the fifth on Ashley Oliver's three-run homer, Landreth's RBI single and Kenley's sacrifice fly to take a 10-4 lead.

Halie Sorrow's RBI double in the fifth scored Ward to cut the margin to 10-5.

In the five-run sixth inning, Katie Carpenter smacked a solo homer over the centerfield fence to give the Bears an 11-5 advantage, then Poe singled in Oliver, and Miller belted her third homer of the day, a three-run shot over the left centerfield fence.

For Lander, Clyde had two hits.
