Box Score 2 GREENEVILLE, Tenn. – The Lander softball team earned its second straight doubleheader split Thursday in a non-conference battle with Tusculum College at Red Edmonds Field. Lander won the first game, 8-4, then fell in the second, 9-1.
The Bearcats improves to 9-11 overall, while Tusculum moves to 8-8.
In the first game, LU's Amanda Chastain (4-4) picked up the win with one strikeout, three walks and three earned runs on eight hits in 5.1 innings pitched.
Tusculum's Rachel Medley (3-4) was tagged with the loss, striking out two, walking four and allowing five earned runs on two hits in 2.2 innings.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the second inning after Casey Kent and Emily Marousek, who both reached on walks, scored on a throwing error.
The Bearcats exploded for five runs in the third to take a 7-0 lead. Marousek's RBI single drove in Dariean Ward, Halie Sorrow went home on a bases loaded walk, and Reychel Webster's three-run double plated Melanie Davis, Kent and Marousek.
Lander went up 8-0 in the sixth inning when Destiny Clyde singled, advanced to second on a throwing error, to third on a fielder's choice, then stole home.
Tusculum avoided the eight-run rule after Cayla Cecil doubled in Bailey Culler, and Kaytlin Stroinski's RBI single plated Alix Kruel and Cecil. The Pioneers added another run in the seventh when Jenna Restivo blasted a leadoff homer to right field.
In the second game, Tusculum's Eliza Davis (4-3) earned the win after striking out three, walking four and allowing one earned run on six hits in five innings.
Hannah Newton (5-6) took the loss for the Bearcats, striking out one, walking two and allowing seven earned runs on eight hits in 2.2 innings.
The Pioneers went up 2-0 in the first inning on Carolyn Williamson's RBI triple that drove in Stroinski, followed by Treslyn Reese's RBI single.
Tusculum then put up five runs in the third inning to take a 7-0 lead. Stroinski led off the inning with a home run to center field, Cecil stole home, and Culler and Nicole Ball had RBI doubles that plated three runners.
The Pioneers finalized their scoring in the fourth inning when Restivo doubled in Cecil.
The Bearcats scored their lone run in the fifth when Marousek doubled in Clyde.
