Hose's double-double not enough as Lander falls to FMU

Box Score

GREENWOOD – One week ago, the Lander Bearcats held Francis Marion to just 49 points. But the Patriots turned things around in their Peach Belt Conference rematch Wednesday night at Horne Arena, shooting 65 percent from the floor and spoiling Tobiasz Hose's huge game by outlasting Lander 90-79.

The Bearcats fell to 15-6 overall and 7-6 in the Peach Belt. Francis Marion improved to 11-11, 3-10.

Lander won 67-49 at Francis Marion last week.

Freshman Mike Davis Jr. made 10 of 12 shots from the floor and scored 26 points for the Patriots, who hit 33 of 51 shots overall (65 percent) including almost 60 percent from 3-point range.

Hose paced the Bearcats with an impressive double-double, scoring 32 points and pulling down 16 rebounds. The junior made 12 of 16 shots from the floor and grabbed eight boards on each end of the floor.

Ricardo Martin added 15 points for Lander, JR Washington contributed 14 points, and Crouch scored 13. Martin and Crouch each scored 11 points in the first half.

Freshman Detrek Browning added 24 points for Francis Marion on nine of 14 shooting from the floor, and Dii'Jon Allen-Jordan scored 18 points. Browning and Allen-Jordan led the Patriots with seven assists apiece.

Francis Marion made 13 of 22 shots from 3-point range (59 percent) and hit 11 of 16 free throws (69 percent).

Lander made 28 of 62 shots from the floor (45 percent), 16 of 24 free throws (67 percent) and seven of 20 from behind the arc (35 percent) while holding a 35-23 edge on the boards.

At the 12:50 mark of the first half, each team was shooting 67 percent from the floor as Francis Marion hit eight of its first 12 while the Bearcats made six of their first nine. The difference was 3-pointers as the Patriots made their first four from behind the arc, helping them hold a 20-17 lead.

Dustin Jones made two 3s while Browning and Davis added one apiece to help Francis Marion to 20 points while Crouch, Hose and Washington were a combined six of eight from the floor to help Lander keep pace. Among Hose's baskets was an offensive rebound dunk.

The Patriots continued their torrid shooting as Browning's jumper at the 10-minute mark increased their shooting percentage to 75 percent (12 for 16) and the lead grew to 32-25. But Martin helped the Bearcats stay within range, making a layup, dunk and two free throws during that time period.

Francis Marion finally missed two shots in a row and Lander took advantage, pulling within 33-30 on Hose's 3 and Washington's jumper.

Davis made the sixth Patriot 3 of the half to extend the visitors lead to 38-32 with 6:45 to go. But Hose nailed a 3 and added one of two free throws to pull the Bearcats within 38-37 with 5:25 left.

Francis Marion was still shooting 71 percent (17 for 24) with 3:30 to go in the first half when Davis scored off a steal, increasing the lead to 44-39.

But Lander was also shooting over 60 percent (17 for 27) as Hose put back his own miss, cutting the deficit to 47-45 with 1:58 left.

The Patriots led 49-46 at the intermission, shooting 68 percent (19 for 28) to Lander's 57 percent (17 for 30). The leaders in the first half were Davis (7 for 8, 17 points) for Francis Marion and Hose (6 for 8, 16 points) for the Bearcats. Hose almost had a double-double already as he pulled down nine of the game's 24 first-half rebounds.

Scott Elder's turnaround jumper tied the game at 52 with 16:27 left and the Bearcats took their first lead since it was 10-9 when Hose rebounded a missed 3 and laid it in, making it 54-52 just inside the 16-minute mark.

But Francis Marion scored 10 unanswered points, taking a 62-54 advantage with 13 minutes to go as Allen-Jordan scored four points and Jones added a 3.

Hose scored the game's next seven points, pulling Lander within 62-61 with 10:34 left. Hose made a 3 from the right corner, hit a jumper from just inside the arc, then followed up his own missed 3 by chasing down the rebound and slicing inside for a layup.

Then the Patriots got hot from behind the arc again as Davis hit a pair while Browning and A.J. Jackson added one apiece for a 74-68 lead with 6:48 to go. The lead grew to double digits at 78-68 with 5:24 left on Davis's basket in the paint and Browning's breakaway layup.

Allen-Jordan's dunk gave Francis Marion its largest lead of the game at 80-69 with 4:09 to go, and the advantage grew to 13 on Browning's basket in the paint with 2:39 left.

Hose's 3 cut Lander's deficit to 10. But Browning found Allen-Jordan wide open under the basket for a dunk, increasing the lead to 87-74 with one minute left.

Washington made three free throws and after a Crouch steal, Hose made two free throws to pull the Bearcats within 87-79 with 42 seconds to go. But that was as close as it would get.
