GREENWOOD – Melanie Davis blasted the winning home run in the first game Thursday to lead the Lander softball team to a non-conference, doubleheader split against Newberry at Doug Spears Field. Lander won the first game, 4-2, and dropped the second, 2-0.

Lander moves to 4-6 overall, while Newberry is now 6-10.

In the first game, Lander's Hannah Newton (3-3) earned the win on the mound after striking out seven, walking two and allowing two earned runs on four hits in seven complete innings.

Newberry's Brittany Middleton (1-5) took the loss with two strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs on four hits in two innings of relief.

Jeri Loffler gave Newberry a 2-0 lead in the second inning when she stroked a two-run homer over the left field fence.

The Bearcats tied the game at 2-all in the fourth after Casey Kent singled, stole second and scored on a throwing error, then Casey Wooten drove in Davis.

Davis then put the Bearcats up 3-2 in the sixth with a leadoff home run over the left field fence and was followed across the play by Emily Marousek, who scored on a bases-loaded walk.

For Lander, Wooten batted 3-for-4.

In the second game, Newberry scored both its runs in the fifth on Maude McCourry's two-RBI double that plated Gabby Berdard and Allison Van Atta.

McCourry (1-1) earned the victory, striking out one, walking two and allowing four hits in the complete seven innings.

Newton suffered the loss, striking out two, walking two and allowing two earned runs on three hits in three innings of relief.

Kent batted 2-for-2 for Lander, while McCourry went 2-for-3 for the Wolves.
