Box Score AIKEN, S.C. - The Lander volleyball team's record-breaking season came to an end Saturday evening when the sixth-seeded Bearcats fell to No. 7 Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1, in the semifinal round of the NCAA Southeast Regional Tournament hosted by USC Aiken at the Convocation Center. Game scores were: 21-25, 25-15, 25-22, 25-14.
Lander ends the season 25-13 overall, while Lenoir-Rhyne (25-7), which has won 13 straight games, advances to Sunday's championship game against the winner of No. 4 Carson-Newman/No. 8 Erskine. The Southeast Region champion advances to the Elite Eight in Tampa, Fla., Dec. 10-12.
The 25 wins is a single-season record for Lander, which was playing in the NCAA regional for only the second time in the 18-year history of the program. Lander last played in the regional in 2008.
Julia Ferreira-Alves and Ali Kirk both posted double-doubles to lead the Bearcats. Ferreira-Alves had 10 kills and 28 digs, while Kirk added 16 assists and 17 digs. Halle Dotson fired 18 kills and had five block assists, while Sophia Perkins had 27 assists, Mallory Taylor 28 digs, and Kaitlyn Harrison 14 digs. Defensively, Reyonia Whipple had six block assists and one solo block.
Lenoir-Rhyne, the South Atlantic Conference tournament champions, were led by Brooke Redmond (19 kills, 21 digs), Emily Steele (11 kills, nine digs), Brandi Thomas (11 kills), Briana Gottberg (26 assists, 11 digs), Jessica Funk (23 assists, 15 digs), Bailey Cloninger (28 digs), and Morgan Bunker (20 digs).
Lander advanced to the semifinals by defeating third-seeded Wingate, 3-1, in the Bearcats' first-ever NCAA tournament win. L-R advanced by defeating second-seeded Flagler, 3-1.
