Box Score COLUMBUS, Ga. - The eighth-seeded Lander women's soccer team scored its first goal after 50 seconds had elapsed in the game Tuesday afternoon, then led 2-0 in the 13th minute, but top-seeded and nationally sixth-ranked Columbus State rallied to claim the Peach Belt Conference Tournament quarterfinal game, 6-2.
The Cougars advance to Friday's semifinal match against the winner of No. 4 Georgia College/No. 5 UNC Pembroke, at 11 a.m., Friday, Nov. 6, at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga.
Lander ends the season at 7-8-1.
The Bearcats jumped on the Cougars early when Sara Flores headed the ball in the goal off a pass from Fayla Junior just 50 seconds into the game.
Junior then stretched the Lander lead to 2-0 after she raced down the left side and beat the goalkeeper for a shot at 13:17.
Columbus State came roaring back. Nicole Corcione's 13th goal of the season cut the Lander lead to 2-1 at 14:56, then the Cougars tied the game at 2-all on Olivia Jarrell's 12th score of the season at 25:43. Jarrell was assisted by Taylor Marks.
Claire Belay followed what proved to be the game-winning goal when she controlled one of her own missed shots and sent it to the left side of the goal.
Marks upped the score to 4-2 at 56:59 off a left-side corner kick. Stephanie Kolwicz's penalty kick at 68:46 gave CSU a 5-2 advantage and Jarrell rounded out the scoring when she found the back of the net for the second time in the game.
CSU outshot the Bearcats, 19-2, and led in corner kicks, 10-0.
Lander goakeeper Megan Wiley grabbed five saves.
