16-0 run helps Lander rally past Eagles for 2-0 start

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – JR Washington and Tobiasz Hose scored a combined 45 points and keyed a 16-0 second half run as the Lander Bearcats rallied past Carson-Newman 72-65 Saturday night in the Carson-Newman Classic at Holt Fieldhouse.

Lander improved to 2-0 on the season.

The Bearcats will have their home opener Wednesday, Nov. 18 at 7:30 vs. King College.

Washington led all scorers with 24 points after tallying 21 in Friday night's win over Brevard College. Washington made nine of 19 shots from the floor while adding seven rebounds and two blocked shots.

Hose added 21 points on eight of 13 shooting from the floor and shared team-high honors with nine rebounds. Scott Elder added eight points, also had nine rebounds and added two blocked shots. Tyree King paced the Bearcats with four assists.

Charles Clark led Carson-Newman with 20 points, including five of eight 3-pointers. Carson Brooks added 14 points while pacing the Eagles with nine rebounds and five assists. Sawyer Williams scored 10 points.

The Bearcats made 27 of 66 shots from the floor (41 percent), 14 of 18 free throws (78 percent) and four of 18 from 3-point range (22 percent).

Carson-Newman hit 19 of 51 shots (37 percent), 19 of 28 free throws (68 percent) and eight of 21 from behind the arc (38 percent).

Each team had 38 rebounds.

Lander faced its largest deficit of the night at 51-38 with 13 minutes left in the game when Hose and Washington fueled the 16-0 run to bring the Bearcats all the way back into a lead. Washington scored eight of those points while Hose had six.

Hose started the run with one free throw, Washington converted a three-point play, Hose made another free throw, Washington hit a 3, Hose collected a steal and dunk, Hose made two free throws, and Elder put the Bearcats on top 52-51 with 10:54 left on an offensive rebound and put-back. Washington followed with a layup after a Carson-Newman turnover to complete the 16-0 run.

The Eagles had gone almost four minutes without scoring until Mason Bates made two free throws to end the 16-0 run, pulling them within 54-53 with 9:16 left.

Elder's layup gave Lander its largest lead of the game at five points, 61-56, with 5:43 to go. Hose's dunk made it 63-58 at the five-minute mark.

Clark's basket pulled Carson-Newman within 63-61 with 4:08 left. But Washington's 3 pushed the Bearcat lead back to five, 66-61, at 3:52.

Clark's two free throws closed the Eagles back within a possession at 66-63 with 2:37 to go. But Hose's jumper off Elder's offensive rebound pushed Lander's advantage back to five, 68-63, at the 1:51 mark.

Williams made one of two free throws to cut Carson-Newman's deficit to four with 1:32 left. But Bates missed a shot from outside the arc that could have pulled the Eagles within one just inside the minute mark, and Elder hit two free throws on the other end for a 70-64 with 54 seconds left.

King made two free throws with nine seconds left to close the scoring.

Washington's layup gave Lander its last lead of the first half at 12-10 at the 14-minute mark. Carson-Newman scored the game's next seven points for a 17-12 advantage.

Washington and Taylor Buffkin made 3s, and Washington converted a layup to pull the Bearcats within 17-15, 20-18 and 21-20, respectively. But the Eagles scored 10 unanswered points, including two 3s by Clark, to build a 31-20 lead with 4:33 left in the half.

Carson-Newman led by as many as 12 in the first half at 40-28 and was up 40-32 at halftime.

A layup by Brooks gave the Eagles their biggest lead of the game at 51-38 with 13:05 to go. But that is when Washington, Hose and company went to work.
