UNC Pembroke softball rallies for doubleheader sweep

GREENWOOD – The UNC Pembroke softball team rallied for six runs in the seventh inning of Sunday afternoon's second game to defeat Lander 6-3 and sweep a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. The Braves also won the first game, 6-3.

UNCP improves to 19-21 overall and 7-11 in the PBC, while Lander fell to 6-38, 0-16.

In the first game, Selena Ashley (8-10) earned the victory on the mound with five strikeouts, two walks and one earned run on two hits in four innings.

Lander's M.K. Pegram (1-14) took the loss, walking two and allowing five earned runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.

Kay Wilson got the Braves started off with a home run over the left field wall in the first inning, then UNCP extended its lead to 5-0 on Taylor Cloninger's grand slam in the third.

Lander cut the margin to 5-2 in the bottom of the inning when Makenzie Smith went home on a wild pitch and Reychel Webster drove in Destiny Clyde.

The Bearcats made it 5-3 in the third after Clyde's RBI single plated Addy Schelble.

UNCP added one more run in the seventh on Cloninger's RBI single that drove in Whitney Jackson.

Wilson and Cloninger had two hits each for the Braves.

In the second game, Ashley (9-10) picked up her second win of the day, walking three and allowing one hit in two innings of relief.

The Bearcats Tyler Riendeau (0-9) struck out one, walked four and allowed one earned run on eight hits in 6.2 innings. Riendeau had a one-hitter going into the seventh inning.

Lander took a 2-0 lead in the third inning after Webster and Chasity Davis had RBI singles that plated Lindsay Newman and Clyde.

The Bearcats stretched the margin to 3-0 in the fifth inning on Chasity Davis' solo home run over the left centerfield fence.

UNCP rallied to win the game in the seventh on Brea Hartley's three-run homer and RBI singles by Morgan Davis, Wilson and Megan Hillard.

Schelble and Chasity Davis each went 3-for-3 for the Bearcats, while Hartley had three hits for the Braves.
