GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team remained winless in the Peach Belt Conference Saturday when the Bearcats lost twice to Francis Marion, 3-1 and 7-0, in a doubleheader at Doug Spears Field.

FMU improves to 22-20 overall and 8-8 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 6-36, 0-14.

In the first game, Taylor Luff (12-11) earned the win, striking out eight, walking five and allowing one earned run on three hits in the complete seven innings.

Lander's M.K. Pegram (1-13) took the loss after striking out four, walking four and allowing two earned runs on eight hits in seven innings.

Francis Marion jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the sixth inning when Taylor Barrineau homered over the left field fence and Luff went home on an error.

Lander trimmed the lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning after Aubrey Lamar doubled, then later scored on a fielder's choice.

FMU went up 3-1 in the sixth after Lindsey Brown went home on Danielle Myers sacrifice fly.

For FMU, Briana Barzola and Luff both had two hits each.

In the second game, FMU's Katie Carnes (10-9) earned the win with one strikeout, one walk and six hits in the complete-game shutout.

Lander's Amanda Chastain (2-7) was the losing pitcher, allowing three earned runs on four hits in two-thirds of an inning.

FMU claimed a 3-0 lead in the first inning on a two-run homer by Barrineau and an RBI single by Myers. The Patriots increased the lead to 4-0 in the second when Jessie Sims went home after Kristie Hanewinckel got hit by a pitch.

The Patriots scored one run each in the third, sixth and seventh innings. In the third, pinch runner Mikala Barnhart scored on a wild pitch, Hanewinckel went home on a wild pitch in the sixth, and Shelby Mathews had an RBI single in the seventh.

For the Patriots, Ashley Burney had three hits, while Barrineau netted two.

Makenzie Smith had two hits for Lander.
