Box Score 2 GREENWOOD - Senior M.K. Pegram ended her home career on a bright note Saturday as she struck out six and led the Lander softball team to a 5-2 Peach Belt Conference victory in the first game as the Bearcats split a doubleheader against GRU Augusta at Doug Spears Field. The Jaguars won the second game, 2-0, in nine innings.
Lander moves to 8-40 overall and 2-17 in the PBC, while GRU Augusta is 21-33, 8-13.
Pegram (2-15) walked two and allowed just one earned run on eight hits in the complete seven innings.
Augusta's Haley Birkle (9-17) was tagged with the loss after striking out three and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in six innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead when MaKenzie Smith walked and later scored after Augusta catcher Mallory Ferguson's pickoff attempt at first went all the way to the right field fence.
The Jaguars tied the game at 1-all in the second when Brooke Stephens doubled and later went home on a Lander throwing error.
Lander regained the lead at 3-1 in the second after Emily Marousek's RBI single plated Hannah Gatley, and Melanie Davis scored on a throwing error.
GRU Augusta cut the Lander lead to 3-2 in the fifth on Ferguson's RBI groundout which scored Brianna Dickens.

For Lander, Destiny Clyde, Bailey and Gatley had two hits each.
For the Jaguars, Ashley Benton and Molly Walton had two hits apiece.
In the second game, Kristen Bagley doubled in Becky Newhouse, while Hannah Vaughn drove in Bagley to win the game in the ninth.
Paige Deschaine (12-15) was awarded the win, striking out 10, walking three and allowing just three hits in the complete-game shutout.
Tyler Riendeau (1-10) suffered the loss for the Bearcats with six strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs on five hits in nine innings.
Benton led the Jaguars with two hits.
