Box Score 2 NEWBERRY – The Lander softball team suffered a pair of one-run losses Wednesday afternoon when the Bearcats dropped a non-conference doubleheader at Newberry. The Wolves won the first game, 3-2, and the second, 2-1.
Lander moves to 6-14 overall, while Newberry improves to 13-6.
In the first game, Newberry's Hannah Blakley earned the win with two strikeouts, one walk and one earned run on seven hits in six innings.
Lander's Taylor Crawford was tagged with the loss after striking out six, walking five and allowing two earned runs on just three hits in six innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Aubrey Lamar's RBI single plated MaKenzie Smith. Newberry bounced back in the bottom of the inning to tie it at 1-all after Gabby Bedard drove in Ashlen Ayres.
The Wolves stretched the lead to 3-1 in the fifth when Casey Nakawa scored on a wild pitch and Katie Capobi singled in Casey Nellum.
Lander's Reychel Webster scored on Melanie Davis' sacrifice in the seventh to cut the lead to one run.
Taylor Donson went 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
In the second game, Newberry's Brittany Middleton was awarded the win, striking out seven and allowing one earned run on seven hits in the complete seven innings.
The Bearcats' M.K. Pegram took the loss with seven strikeouts, two walks and two earned runs on four hits.
Destiny Clyde's RBI triple in the third inning plated Melanie Davis, who had reached on a double, for a 1-0 advantage.
Newberry rallied for two runs in the sixth for the win when Ayres tripled in Bedard and Capobi drove in Ayres.
For Lander, Melanie Davis and Webster both went 2-for-3, while Clyde batted 2-for-4.
