Box Score 2 COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Columbus State softball team swept a Peach Belt Conference doubleheader against Lander Monday afternoon by winning the first game, 1-0, and the second, 8-1.
CSU improves to 23-16 overall and 6-8 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 6-30, 0-12.
In the first game, CSU's Taylor Turner (8-8) was awarded the win after striking out five, walking two and allowing two hits in the complete-game shutout.
Lander's Amanda Chastain (2-4) took the loss with one strikeout, one walk and one earned run on five hits in six innings.
Columbus scored the lone run of the game on Lindsey DeFee's lead-off home run down the left field line in the third inning.
Suzanne Carney had two hits for the Cougars.
In the second game, CSU's Abby Green (6-1) earned the victory on the mound, striking out seven, walking three and allowing one earned run on two hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Tyler Riendeau (0-6) was the losing pitcher with four strikeouts, four walks and five earned runs on seven hits in four innings.
Columbus took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Carney scored on a wild pitch and Morgan Staffins' RBI single plated Casey Googe.
The Cougars stretched the lead to 4-0 in the second on Googe's two-run home run.
Lander cut the margin to 4-1 in the third when Melanie Davis scored on an error.
Columbus added one run in the fifth on Staffins' RBI single, then the Cougars scored their final three runs in the sixth on Googe's two-run homer and a solo shot by Staffins.
Googe batted 4-for-4, while Staffins added three hits and Kristen Carr two.
