Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Young Harris College softball team kept Lander winless in the Peach Belt Conference Sunday when the Mountain Lions swept a doubleheader, 3-2 and 15-9, at Doug Spears Field.
YHC improves to 13-18 overall and 3-3 in the PBC, while Lander slips to 6-24, 0-8.
In the first game, Young Harris' Darby Stanford (5-7) earned the win with seven strikeouts and two earned runs on seven hits in 5.2 innings. Katie-Jo Gentry collected her first save of the year in 1.1 innings of relief.
Lander's M.K. Pegram (1-10) suffered the loss, striking out four, walking five and allowing three earned runs on eight hits in the complete seven innings.
Stacia Williams and Lyndsey York gave Young Harris a 2-0 lead in the first with RBI singles, then the Mountain Lions stretched the lead to 3-0 in the sixth when pinch hitter Kimberly Strebe scored on a wild pitch.
Lander cut the lead to 3-2 in the sixth when Aubrey Lamar drove in Taylor Donson and Reychel Webster with an RBI single to right field.
Webster, Lamar and Chasity Davis had two hits each for Lander. YHC's Sarah Magill led the Mountain Lions with three hits.
In the second game, Brittany Henry (4-4) was awarded the victory on the mound after striking out six and allowing three earned runs on four this in four innings of work.
Lander's Pegram (1-11) was tagged with the loss after striking out two, walking four and allowing nine earned runs on seven hits in 3.2 innings.
YHC took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Chandler Stookbury's two-RBI single, then extended the lead to 6-0 in the fourth on Stooksbury's grand slam to left centerfield.
Lander rallied in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-6 lead when Lamar and Destiny Clyde had RBI doubles, Hannah Gatley and MaKenzie Smith had RBI singles and Smith later scored when Webster struck out and was thrown out at first base.
The Mountain Lions exploded for nine runs in the sixth to regain the lead at 15-7. Sydnee Weaver scored on a wild pitch, York's sacrifice fly plated Sarah Magill, Sarah Beth Marquis doubled in Stooksbury, Williams scored on a fielder's choice, Marquis scored on an error and Weaver, Magill and Stooksbury had RBI singles.
The Bearcats scored one run each in the sixth and seventh innings on Melanie Davis' solo home run and Gatley's groundout that sent Donson home.
Smith had three hits for Lander, while Donson and Lamar had two each.
Stooksbury collected four hits for Young Harris, while Weaver and Magill had two apiece.
