Box Score 2 GREENWOOD The Lander softball team suffered two losses Saturday afternoon, losing to the Catawba College Indians, 4-2 and 6-0, in a non conference doubleheader at Spears Field.
Catawba opens the season at 2-0, while the Bearcats move to 0-6.
In game one, Catawba took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a Natalie Naturile RBI single.
Lander knotted the game at 1-all in the bottom of the second when Nikki Montesanti tripled to left field and later scored on a throwing error. Catawba regained the lead at 2-1 in the top of the fourth on Morgan Brann's RBI single.
The Indians took a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth on a Gina Gerone RBI single and scored again in the top of the sixth via Katherine Shumaker's RBI single.
The Bearcats trimmed the lead to 4-2 in the bottom of the sixth when Hannah Gatley drew a bases loaded walk.
Carley Tysinger (1-0) earned the win for the Indians, striking out one and walking two in three innings of relief.
M.K. Pegram (0-3) suffered the loss, striking out one, walking two and giving up four hits in 3.1 innings of work.
In game two, Emily Hunneycutt (1-0) tossed a complete game shutout, striking out one and allowing two hits.
Tyler Riendeau (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five hits in 1.1 innings of work.
The Indians took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first on RBI singles from Naturile and Hunneycutt. They would extend their lead to 3-0 in the top of the second when Kim Fesperman scored on a wild pitch.
The Indians made it 4-0 in the fifth when Gerone laced an RBI double into left center field, then added two more runs in the sixth on Katherine Shumaker's two RBI double off the left center field fence.
