Late first-half run pushes Aiken past Lady Bearcats 75-61

AIKEN – Despite 17 points by Ty'hesha Reynolds, the Lander Lady Bearcats suffered their sixth consecutive loss when they fell 75-61 at Peach Belt Conference rival USC Aiken Wednesday night.

Lander's record dropped to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in the Peach Belt. Aiken improved to 7-14, 5-7.

Porsha Martin led the Lady Pacers with a double-double, posting 14 points and 14 rebounds. Mariah Durian added 11 points while Mackenzie Reese fell just shy of a double-double with nine points and nine boards.

Aiken had an overwhelming 48-24 rebounding edge and shot 50 percent from the field in the game.

Alyssia Watkins added 11 points and a team-high six rebounds for the Lady Bearcats, Portia McCray also scored 11 points, and Ariel Parker added 10 points.

Lander led 14-5 with 15:19 left in the opening half on Alexis Armstrong's 3-pointer, and increased its lead to 25-14 at the 10:18 mark when Reynolds nailed a 3.

But over the next eight minutes, Aiken went on a game-changing 22-3 run to turn an 11-point deficit into a 36-28 lead. The Lady Pacers used balanced scoring during the run, with Martin leading the way with three inside baskets.

Aiken, shooting 56 percent in the first half (16 of 28) to Lander's 37 percent (12 of 32), led 40-32 at the intermission.

The Pacers opened the second half with an 8-0 run, including a Carly Gilreath 3-pointer, and led 48-32 inside the 16-minute mark. After the early 11-point deficit, Aiken outscored the Lady Bearcats 34-7 over 12 minutes.

Lander was scoreless in the second half until 15:17 was left when Watkins made two free throws and one minute later, McCray hit two more free throws to pull the Lady Bearcats within 48-36.

But Amaura Brandt's 3 extended Aiken's lead to 51-36 with 13:19 to go.

Lander was 0-for-9 from the floor with six turnovers in the first seven-plus minutes of the second half before finally scoring a field goal at the 12:12 mark when Watkins hit a jumper.

Twenty-one seconds later, Watkins got a steal and basket to pull the Lady Bearcats within 51-40 with 11:51 to go.

Lander went three minutes without scoring before Parker's basket closed the visitors within 54-42 with 8:44 remaining.

Durian's free throws extended Aiken's lead to 58-42 with 8:15 left, and Parker and Gilreath exchanged 3-pointers to make it 61-45 with 7:46 to go.

Alexis Ware's 3 gave the Lady Pacers their biggest lead of the game at 64-47 at the seven-minute mark.

Watkins completed a three-point play to pull the Lady Bearcats within 67-55 with 5:25 to go. Two free throws by Reynolds cut the deficit to 10, 67-57, with 4:30 left.

Reynolds scored with 3:43 to go, pulling Lander within 69-59. But after a couple of scoreless minutes, Aiken extended its lead back to 12 on Courtney Mealing's basket, making it 71-59 with 1:24 left.

For the game, the Lady Pacers made 28 of 56 shots from the floor, 11 of 17 free throws (65 percent) and eight of 18 from 3-point range (44 percent).

Lander made 21 of 58 shots (36 percent), 12 of 16 free throws (75 percent) and seven of 21 from behind the arc (33 percent).
