Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Lander softball team lost two heartbreaking games in a non-conference doubleheader against Lincoln Memorial Sunday afternoon as the Railsplitters broke ties in the late innings in both contests to claim the wins. LMU won the first game, 4-3, and the second, 3-2, in eight innings.
LMU improves to 7-1 overall, while Lander moves to 2-8.
In the first game, Samantha Smith (4-0) earned the win on the mound for LMU, striking out two, walking three and allowing two earned runs on five hits in five innings pitched. Kirstin Toole collected her first save of the season in two innings of relief.
Lander's Amanda Chastain (1-1) suffered the loss with four strikeouts, three walks and four earned runs on six hits in six innings.
Toole gave the Railsplitters a 3-0 lead with her three-run double in the third inning.
Lander cut the margin to 3-2 in the fourth after Melanie Davis drove in Aubrey Lamar and pinch runner Sarah Fuller on a single down the left field line. The Bearcats made it 3-all in the fifth on Fuller's RBI single to right centerfield that plated Reychel Webster.
LMU scored the winning run in the six on Jennifer Moose's RBI single that plated Danae Reed.
In the second game, Toole (4-2) picked up the victory with one strikeout and one walk in two innings of relief.
The Bearcats' Taylor Crawford (1-3) took the loss with one strikeout, three walks and one earned run on two hits in two innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first when Emily Marousek crossed the plate on Taylor Donson's groundout to the shortstop.
The Railsplitters tied it at 1-all on Brianna Mulkey's RBI single that scored Emilee Solomon.
Donson doubled in Marousek in the sixth to give Lander a 2-1 advantage, but LMU came right back and tied it at 2-2 in the seventh on Reed's lead off home run over the left field fence.
Reed drove in the game-winning run when she singled in Toole with an RBI hit to left field in the eighth.
Solomon and Reed had two hits each for LMU.
