Box Score GREENWOOD - The Lander women's soccer team scored its first goal of the season after just 21 seconds Thursday night and freshman Sydney Thompson netted a hat trick to lead the Lady Bearcats to an 8-0 non-conference victory over North Greenville University in the season opener for both teams at the Jeff May Complex. Six different players scored for Lander.
Lander is 1-0 overall, while North Greenville is 0-1. The eight goals is the most ever scored by the Lady Bearcats in a season opener.
The Lady Bearcats Taylor Piorkowski netted the first goal on an assist from Kimberly Kesler for the first of six first-half scores. Hilary Ferguson followed with an unassisted goal at 2:04; Casey Black found the back of the net on an assist from Erin Dooley at 18:16; Kesler gave Lander a 4-0 lead at 23:58 on an unassisted shot; then Thompson scored the final two goals, the first assisted by Fayla Junior, at 30:17 and 35:18.
In the second half, Dooley stretched the lead to 7-0 on a long, unassisted shot at 47:53. Thompson earned the hat trick with her third goal of the game at 65:51 that gave the Lady Bearcats an 8-0 lead.
The Lady Bearcats played 22 players in the game.
Lander outshot the Crusaders, 26-2, and led in corner kicks, 7-0.
Lady Bearcat goalkeeper Katie Lyle was credited with one save, while North Greenville's Kathryn Tate had five.
