Box Score 2 HICKORY, N.C. – The Lenoir-Rhyne College softball team swept Lander, 5-0 and 8-2, Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader at Bears Field
Lenoir-Rhyne improves to 28-11 overall, while Lander falls to 16-29.
In the first game, Maryann Hoskins (12-4) earned the win, striking out nine, walking one and allowing four hits in the complete-game shutout.
Lander's M.K. Pegram (6-10) suffered the loss after striking out six, walking two and allowing four earned runs on five hits in 4.1 innings.
L-R recorded all five runs in the fifth inning on Lauren Elder's two-RBI double that scored Jody Mizelle and Shania Johnson, Jessica Fellmeth's run-scoring double that plated Elder, and Megan Laxton's single that drove in Haily Jarman and Fellmeth.
Bethany Beggs went 2-for-3 for the Bearcats.
In the second game, Brandi Hole (15-7) was awarded the win after striking out three, walking three and allowing two earned runs on six hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Amanda Hamby (2-5) took the loss after walking one and allowing three earned runs on three hits in one-third of an inning.
L-R went up 4-0 in the first inning on Jarmin's RBI single and Laxton's three-RBI double.
Lander cut the margin to 4-2 in the third when Taylor Donson drove in Hannah Gatley, and Bethany Beggs singled in Donson.
L-R added four more runs in the fifth to make it 8-2 on Laxton's second three-run double of the day and Katie Carpenter's RBI single.
For Lander, Gatley went 2-for-2.
For L-R, Laxton batted 2-for-3.
