Hamby leads Lander softball to split against No. 19 CSU

GREENWOOD - Lander senior pitcher Amanda Hamby came up with the biggest game of her career Friday afternoon as she earned a 1-0 complete game shutout against No. 19 Columbus State on Senior Day en route to the Bearcats Peach Belt Conference softball doubleheader split at Doug Spears Field. Columbus State won the second game, 2-1.

Lander moves to 15-26 overall and 5-13 in the PBC, while Columbus is now 30-14, 11-5. In addition to Hamby, other senior recognized were Brittney Sheriff, Alyssa Hartley and Casey Corbitt.

Lander won the first game in storybook fashion with no score going into the bottom of the seventh inning. Kelsey Davis reached on a catcher's error after striking out, advanced to second on Corbitt's sacrifice bunt, to third on Nikki Montesanti's groundout and scored a CSU fielding error on a hit to second base by Hartley.

Hamby (2-3) earned the win after striking out four, walking two and allowing five hits in seven innings.

Columbus State's Mollie Russell (15-8) took the loss after striking out five, walking one and allowing one run (not earned) on three hits in 6.2 innings.

For Lander, Sheriff batted 2-for-3 to lead the Bearcats at the plate.

For Columbus State, Casey Googe went 2-for-3.

In the second game, CSU's Taylor Turner (10-4) earned the win after striking out three, walking one and allowing no runs on four hits in five innings. Russell was awarded her second save of the season with one strikeout in one inning of work.

Lander's Kelsey Davis (6-9) took the loss after striking out seven, walking one and allowing one earned run on five hits in the complete seven innings.

CSU took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Bree Nowlin's sacrifice fly that plated Turner. The Cougars went up 2-0 in the sixth on a Lander throwing error that scored pinch runner Nina Rubio.

Lander cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth when Sheriff walked, advanced to second on a ground out, to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another wild pitch.
