Box Score 2 ANDERSON – The Lander softball team has won five of its last six games after sweeping Anderson University Tuesday night at Smethers Field. The Bearcats won the first game, 8-7 in eight innings, then took the nightcap, 4-3.
Lander improves to 16-25 overall, while Anderson drops to 30-10.
In the first game, Kelsey Davis (8-8) earned the win with two strikeouts, one walk and no hits in 2.2 innings of relief.
Anderson's Lauren Bell (16-5) took the loss, striking out seven, walking six and allowing four earned runs on seven hits in the complete eight innings.
Anderson took a 2-0 lead in the first inning when Jessica Neidigh and Danielle Swygert scored on bases-loaded walks.
Lander exploded in the third inning to take a 5-2 lead after Taylor Donson smacked a three-run homer to left centerfield, Bethany Beggs, who reached on a walk, stole second and advanced to third on a passed ball, scored on an error, and Chasity Davis went home on another Trojan miscue.
The Bearcats stretched their lead to 7-2 in the fifth inning on Chasity Davis' two-run homer to centerfield.
The Trojans trimmed the Lander lead to 7-4 in the bottom half of the inning on Bailey Smith's two-run shot to left field, then tied it up in the sixth when Swygert's bases-loaded walk sent Neidigh home, Laura Jansky's RBI single plated Molly Child, and Abby Child scored as a result of a hit by pitch.
Lander went up 8-7 in the eighth inning when Amanda Chastain, who was placed on second due to the international tiebreaker, advanced to third on Melanie Davis' sacrifice bunt then scored on a wild pitch.
For Lander, Casey Corbitt batted 2-for-4 and Brittney Sheriff 2-for-5.
For Anderson, Neidigh batted 3-for-4.
In the second game, Kelsey Davis earned her second win of the night after striking out three and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in the complete seven innings.
The Trojans' Smith (14-5) suffered the loss, striking out one, walking three and allowing three earned runs on seven hits in seven innings.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Chasity Davis' solo home run to centerfield.
Anderson knotted the game at 1-1 in the fifth inning on Charlotte Sieber's RBI double that drove in Samantha Young.
Lander extended its lead to 4-1 in the seventh when Sheriff's RBI double drove in Donson and Melanie Davis, then Begg's RBI single scored Sheriff.
The Trojans' cut the lead to 4-3 in the seventh after Abby Child's RBI double plated Swygert and Neidigh.
For Lander, Sheriff batted 2-for-3.
For Anderson, Swygert batted 3-for-4, Jansky 2-for-3 and Neidigh 2-for-4.
