Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – Freshman Bethany Beggs came up with two game-winning hits that plated Brittney Sheriff both times Wednesday to lead the Lander softball team to a pair of come-from-behind victories against Brevard College in a non-conference doubleheader at Doug Spears Field. Lander won the first game, 5-4, and the second, 7-6, in extra innings.
Lander improves to 10-11 overall, while Brevard drops to 5-12.
In the first game, M.K. Pegram (4-2) earned the win after striking out four, walking two and allowing three earned runs on seven hits in five innings pitched.
The Tornadoes' Jamie Hrobak (5-5) suffered the loss, striking out one, walking two and allowing four earned runs on six hits in 4.1 innings.
Brevard took a 1-0 lead in the third inning when Alyssa Miller, who reached on a Lander throwing error, scored on Kayla Clemens' RBI single to centerfield.
Lander went up 2-1 in the bottom of the inning after Beggs drove in Hannah Gatley with a single to left field and Sheriff scored from second when Chasity Davis singled and the Brevard committed an error at the plate.
The Tornadoes went up 4-2 in the fifth on a two-RBI double by Brittany Tucker and Emily Boykin's run-scoring single.
But Lander came right back in the bottom of the inning to tie it at 4-all on Taylor Donson's two-run homer over the left field fence, then won it on Beggs' RBI groundout.
Donson batted 2-for-3 for Lander and Clemens went 3-for-4 for Brevard.
In the second game, Lander's Kelsey Davis (3-7) earned the win in relief, striking out one and allowing one run (not earned) in three innings.
Clemens (1-3) took the loss for Brevard, striking out eight, walking one and allowing four earned runs on 15 hits in 7.2 innings pitched.
Lander took a 1-0 lead in the first when Beggs scored from second on a Chasity Davis single coupled with a Brevard throwing error at the plate.
The Bearcats extended the lead to 3-0 in the second after Nikki Montesanti scored on a combination of a Melanie Davis single and a Brevard error, and Donson's RBI single plated Gatley.
Brevard cut the Lander lead to 3-2 in the fourth on Heather Morris' two-run double, then went up 5-3 in the fifth on an RBI single by Brittany Fowler and a two-run single by Emily Boykin.
Lander forced extra innings when it tied it at 5-all in the sixth on Donson's RBI double and Sheriff's run-scoring triple.
Using the International Tiebreaker, Brevard went up 6-5 on Michelle Ray's RBI single.
Lander tied it at 6-all when Sheriff's run-scoring single plated Gatley.
For Lander, Sheriff batted 4-for-5, Montesanti 3-for-4, Melanie Davis 2-for-3, Donson 2-for-4 and Beggs 2-for-5.
For Brevard, Clemens and Tucker had two hits each.
