Box Score 2 HARTSVILLE – The Coker softball team had to come from behind in both games Wednesday afternoon, but the Cobras prevailed with a pair of one-run victories in their non-conference doubleheader sweep against Lander. Coker won the first game, 4-3, and the second, 5-4.
Coker improves to 20-12 overall, while Lander slips to 11-24.
In the first game, Coker's Phillips (9-6) earned the win, striking out four, walking two and allowing three earned runs on 10 hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's M.K. Pegram (5-8) took the loss after striking out six, walking four and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings.
Coker took a 2-0 lead in the fourth inning when Jaclin Poole scored on a bases-loaded walk and Sarah Rountree's RBI single plated Logan Cox.
Lander tied it at 2-all in the sixth inning after Chasity Davis drove in Bethany Beggs, and Hannah Gatley singled in pinch runner Amanda Chastain.
The Cobras regained the lead at 3-2 in the sixth on Krista Frazier's RBI single.
Lander tied it at 3-all in the seventh when Beggs went home on Casey Corbitt's RBI single.
Coker won the game in the seventh on Stacy Burr's RBI double that drove in Sydney Weatherford.
For Lander, Corbitt batted 3-for-4, Beggs 2-for-3 and Chasity Davis 2-for-4.
For Coker, Rountree and Burr both went 3-for-4.
In the second game, the Cobras Breanna Skipper (9-3) was awarded the win after striking out four, walking two and allowing three earned runs on seven hits in 6.2 innings pitched. Lauren Phillips earned her second save of the season after one-third of an inning on the mound.
Lander's Tyler Riendeau (1-4) took the loss with one strikeout, one walk and two earned runs on eight hits in 3.2 innings pitched.
Beggs gave Lander a first-inning lead with a solo home run, but the Cobras tied it up at 1-1 in the bottom half after Clarissa Suttle scored on a Lander error.
Lander went back up 3-1 in the third after Taylor Donson scored on Brittney Sheriff's run-scoring triple, then Sheriff went home via a Coker fielding error.
Coker exploded for four runs in the fourth to take a 5-3 advantage as Alex Cataldo singled in Ashley Gallman, Rountree drove in Lauren Brailsford and Weatherford's two-RBI single plated Rountree and Breanna Skipper.
The Bearcats trimmed the lead to 5-4 in the sixth when Corbitt scored on Arielle Buchholz's groundout.
For Coker, Weatherford batted 2-for-3.
