Box Score 2 GREENWOOD – The Newberry College softball team swept Lander in a non-conference doubleheader Wednesday, winning the first game, 6-4, and the second 2-1, at Doug Spears Field.
Newberry improves to 10-4 overall, while Lander moves to 6-9.
In the first game, Newberry's Shelley Jeffcoat (6-1) earned the win with one walk and one earned run on one hit in five innings pitched.
Lander's M.K. Pegram (3-2) took the loss after striking out two, walking three and allowing one earned run on five hits in 4.1 innings.
Newberry took a 1-0 lead in the third inning on Jennifer Yancey's RBI single that plated Katie Capobianco.
Lander tied it at 1-all in the fourth when Taylor Donson went home on Chasity Davis' sacrifice fly.
The Wolves went back up 2-1 in the fifth when Danielle Basch scored from third on a fielding error, then they added four runs in the seventh on six Lander errors.
With bases loaded and two outs in the seventh, Lander cut the margin to 6-4 when Kelsey Davis scored from third on an error and Brittney Sheriff's two-RBI single drove in pinch runners Hannah Gatley and Nikki Montesanti.
For Newberry, Capobianco, Brittany Phillips and Yancey had two hits each.
In the second game, Newberry's Kaylyn Camacho (4-2) was awarded the win after striking out seven, walking three and allowing one earned run on three hits in the complete seven innings.
Lander's Kelsey Davis (2-5) suffered the loss, striking out two, walking one and allowing two earned runs on five hits in seven innings.
Newberry took a 2-0 lead in the third on run-scoring singles by Gabby Bedard and Phillips.
Chasity Davis' solo homerun to left field cut the lead to 2-1 in the third for Lander. It was Davis' first roundtripper of the year.
For Lander, Sheriff batted 2-for-3 with one triple.
Bedard batted 2-for-4 for the Wolves.
