Box Score 2 JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Freshman Bethany Beggs belted her first collegiate grand slam to lead the Lander softball team to a 7-4 non-conference victory over Carson-Newman in the first game as the Bearcats split their Tuesday afternoon non-conference doubleheader. The Eagles won the second game, 4-0.
Lander moves to 3-3 overall, while previously unbeaten Carson-Newman is 7-1.
In the first game, Amanda Hamby (1-0) earned the win, striking out one, walking one and allowing four earned runs on 10 hits in 6.1 innings.
C-N's Cassie Lyons suffered the loss after striking out two, walking three and allowing six earned runs on six hits in 3.1 innings.
Lander took a 2-0 lead in the second inning when Beggs' RBI single plated Chasity Davis. Beggs later scored from third when Kelsey Davis was caught stealing second.
C-N cut the margin to 2-1 in the bottom of the inning on Elayna Siebert's RBI triple.
Beggs' third-inning grand slam gave the Bearcats a 6-1 lead. It was the Bearcats first homer of the season. Beggs' RBI triple in the seventh inning plated Chasity Davis for the Bearcats final run.
Carson-Newman rallied for three runs in the seventh inning on Bethany Davis's two-run homer and Cassie Elliott's solo shot.
For Lander, Beggs went 4-for-4 with one homer, one triple and six RBI, while Kelsey Davis batted 2-for-4 and Chasity Davis went 1-for-3 with one double.
For Carson-Newman, Jessica Morgan and Brittany Hefner both collected two hits.
In the second game, C-N's Kaitie Sims (4-0) earned the win after striking out four, walking four and allowing two hits in the complete game shutout.
Lander's Kelsey Davis (1-2) took the loss, striking out one, walking three and allowing four runs on eight hits in 4.1 innings.
C-N went up 1-0 in the second inning when Sara Kelley raced home from third on a fielding error.
The Eagles added their final three runs in the fifth inning on Kelley's two-run homer and Caitlyn Lance's RBI single.
Brittney Sheriff and Hannah Gatley had Lander's lone hits.
