Box Score GREENWOOD – Nina Morales scored two goals Tuesday night to lead the fourth-seeded Lander women's soccer team to a 5-3 victory over fifth-seeded North Georgia in the quarterfinal round of the Peach Belt Conference Tournament held at the Jeff May Complex.
Lander improves to 13-4 overall, while North Georgia is 12-5-1. The win ties the Lander record for most victories in a single season. The Lady Bearcats had 13 wins in both the 2007 and 2011 seasons.
Lander advances to Friday's semifinal round where the Bearcats will playtop-seeded Clayton State, a 1-0 winner over eighth-seeded Montevallo, at 11 a.m. at Blanchard Woods Park in Evans, Ga. The championship game is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
The Lady Bearcats dominated the game early by scoring three goals in the first 16 minutes. Lander took a 1-0 lead on a Morales shot from 10 yards out on an assist by Sydney Thompson at 7;20.
Danielle Shaw stretched the Lady Bearcat lead to 2-0 at 14:50 when she connected on a free kick.
Taylor Piorkowski, assisted by Casey Black, made it 3-0 on an unassisted goal from five yards out at 16:03.
North Georgia began to rally when Kelly Penston scored the first of her three goals at 24:58 from in front of the goal on an assist from Kassidy Freeman. Penston and Freeman teamed up again to make it 3-2 at 28:53 from another shot in front of the goal.
Lander went up 4-2 at 50:28 when Jaymee Gibbons found the back of the net on an unassisted goal, then Morales connected on her second goal at 69:49 to give the Bearcats a 5-2 advantage.
North Georgia netted the final score of the game after Penston completed her hat trick with another shot from in front of the goal.
Lander outshot the Nighthawks, 18-12, but North Georgia held the advantage in corner kicks, 7-4.
North Georgia goalkeeper Mallory Sayre and Lander's Katie Lyle each had three saves.
