Box Score WINTER PARK, Fla. – The Lander men's soccer team's trip towards an NCAA Division II national championship came to an end Friday night when Carson-Newman defeated the Bearcats, 4-3, on penalty kicks after the teams played to a 0-0 tie after two overtimes in the NCAA Tournament Round of 16 hosted by Rollins College.
Lander finishes the season with a 12-5-2 overall record, while Carson-Newman, which improves to 14-5-1, advances to Sunday's quarterfinal round game against the Rollins/West Florida winner.
The Bearcats' Chris Hobbs gave Lander a 1-0 lead on penalty kicks, but C-N tied it at 1-1 on Matheus Bachi's kick. The Eagles took advantage of Lander's missed second attempt and grabbed a 2-1 advantage on Kristian Speake's score. Lander's Kevin Durand made it 2-2, but the Eagles went up 3-2 on Nick Skoda's kick. Ollivier Guerguen made it 3-3 for the Bearcats, but Carson-Newman's Ross Frame made it 4-3. The Eagles claimed the win when Lander failed on its fifth attempt.
Carson-Newman outshot Lander, 20-12, and led in corner kicks, 8-7.
Lander goalkeeper Barrett Nielsen had seven saves, while Carson-Newman's Rumwald Le Guevel had three.
